'Likely destined to become a classroom classic'

Caryn E Neumann, Ohio State University, USA

From the Back Cover

America in the Progressive Era, 1890-1914 provides a readable, analytical narrative of the emergence, influence, and decline of the spirit of progressive reform that animated American politics and culture around the turn of the twentieth century. Covering the turbulent 1890s and the era of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson, the book covers the main political and policy events of a period which set the agenda for American public life during the remainder of the twentieth century.

Key features include:
#A clear account of the continuing debate in the United States over the role of government and the pursuit of social justice
#A full examination of the impact of reform on women and minorities
#A rich selection of documents that allow the historical actors to communicate directly to today's reader
#An extensive Bibliography providing a valuable guide to additional reading and further research

Based on the most recent scholarship and written to be read by students, America in the Progressive Era makes this turbulent period come alive.

LEWIS T. GOULD is Eugene C. Barker Centennial Professor of American History at the University of Austin, Texas.

Designed for the college classroom, this is a wonderful summary of the Progressive movement. It covers the debate about the role of government in American life as well as the pursuit of social justice. The author though defines racism as oppression of blacks and does not include any treatment of Asians. Still a great book.

This book really opened my eyes to this era of American history. I knew some of the information but the detail in this book brought the issues to life. I wish there was more info on WHY some of the choices were made. For example, what was going on in the media pro and con that caused citizens to make the decisions they did. I would really like to see if the media at that time was as left-wing and biased as they are today. I suspect they were and that's the way their stories and editorials were slanted resulting in the non-constitutional selections that people made.

I recently read a very good book from Judge Andrew Napalitano about Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson and wanted to learn more about the Progressive movement. I have just started this book and so far it looks like this will give me a fair and accurate description of this period in American history. As described in other reviews it is written as a college level book and can be a bit of a slow read, but it is exactly what I wanted. This is a good book no matter what your political slant is.
