This review is from: American Anthem [VHS] (VHS Tape)
American Anthem was first introduced to me when I was a teenager at a group home, by a very close friend of mine. She told me that we were lucky to get it cause it was the last new release in the video store. And the first time we saw it, we were highly addicted. We were so addicted, that we had to convince the video store to give us a few more days extra to keep it. What was even more fun was that we actually spent a whole day from mornin to night watching it over and over! That's how AWESOME the movie is! It's old, and to most poeple OLD NEWS, but that's what's so great about it. If you haven't seen it, SEE IT! You won't be dissappointed!

This movie had, and has, a special place in my heart. A good story that leaves you rooting for the good guys. Something about the Olympics in the 1980's connected on a personal level. Maybe it was because of the many underdog types actually winning.
Also having a nice love story and a drama story about the main character's father and mother and the entire family's relationship to one another. This movie does well to draw you in and make you care. The physical work is also tremendous and this whole film is beautifully shot. I hope this film makes it to dvd soon!!! Highly recommened!

The theme is a wonderful drama with conflict and resolution. It is quite sad to see how the father son relationship exists. But the film has made me be able to do what I have always dreamt of doing. Believe in yourself and having support can and often does push one to accomplish their dream, just as in the movie. Excellent movie and if you haven't seen it, see it!!!

A wonderful movie! The plot centers on a young outcast who is attempting to find himself. Mitch Gaylord gives this superb performance as he shows us a glimpse of the duality of man. On the one hand, he is a tough, street-smart kid ready to follow in the footsteps of his father and work with power tools and wear wife-beater shirts. On the other hand, he is a feminine gymnast who wears tights and does cartwheels. In the end he learns that he does not have to sacrifice one aspect of himself in order to fulfill the other. I also thought the sideplot with Janet Jones and the kid from Mask was nice. That boy has the moves of Fred Astaire and James Brown!

I saw this movie many years ago as a younger teenager. I think that it gives a lot of hope to the underpriveleged and is a great eighties movie to see.

Another awesome movie overlooked,
This review is from: American Anthem [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have watched this movie so many times I know the words by heart. Mitch Gaylord and Janet Jones are really good actors. It is one of the best portrayals of modern gymnastics -- showing the intense training modern gymnasts go through to be the best, how relationships work in and outside of the gym, and the transfer to younger athletes within the sport. It is a must for any gymnastics fan! And for those not so interested in the sport it has a great story of overcoming the odds in it too. This is a movie no one should miss!

American Anthem DVD review,
By BeverlyWV (West Virginia) - See all my reviews Steve (Gaylord), the gymnast dealing with a troubled homelife that includes an unemployed, abusive father while recouperating from injury that sets back his progress in his pursuit of excellence. General movie viewers that have no knowledge of the daily training difficulties that a real gymnast goes through, will not be able to appreciate this movie to its fullest. But for those who love the sports and its atheletes (whether beginner or advanced level) will understand and symphathise with the characters, and appreciate the exciting performances and drama. The final competition also has the added drama of a girl gymnast that injures her ankle but turns in a winning performance and then has to be carried off the floor by her coach while the audience cheers her brave actions. (Sound familiar?!) Notable performances in the final competition shows Li Yuejiu, who was China's first floor exercise world champion as 'Ling Xiang'. Supporting actor, Stacy Maloney as 'Kirk Baker' later became Mens' Gymnastic Coach of 2000 US Olympians in Gymnastics, for twin brothers Paul & Morgan Hamm. Mitch went on to make motivational appearances and workout videos. Mitch also will return to the big screen in 'Sledge: The Untold Story' (2005). |
