Book Description

May 31, 2004
Many people know of Milwaukee's famous beer brewers, such as Schlitz, Pabst, and Miller, but these pages contain the story of the original baseball Brewers. The Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association spent 51 seasons (1902-1952) on the city's near north side. To have had the opportunity to stretch out in the sun-soaked stands of Borchert Field during that era was to witness minor league baseball at its best. The Brewers were the second-winningest franchise in the league's history, and names like Tom "Sugar Boy" Dougherty and Nick "Tomato Face" Cullop were once household words throughout the city. This book stands as a tribute to the colorful history of this team and to all the former players, coaches, and managers who ever wore the woolens for Milwaukee.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Milwaukee Brewers, Days of Yore, September 4, 2006

This review is from: American Association Milwaukee Brewers, The (WI) (Images of Baseball) (Paperback)
This is a book about the Milwaukee Brewers, the American Association Milwaukee Brewers, the team that I grew up with. Did you know that Casey Stengel guided the Brewers to first place in 1944? He did. The Brewers played in the American Association from 1902 to 1952. The Braves pulled up their Boston stakes in 1953 and moved the team to Milwaukee thus ending the Brewers 51 year relationship with the American Association. If you were raised on the old Brewers, as I was, there are some names you will instantly recognize. Heinz Becker, Nick Cullop, Danny Murtaugh and future Hall of Fame inductee Rudy York. There is also the obscure. Hy Vandenberg, Alex Metzler and Pete Manion. You will also learn that Anton "Tony" Kubek, father of Yankee infielder and former radio/television broadcaster Tony Kubek, played for the Brewers from 1930 to 1935. The book is long on pictures, but short on text. It does not have an index. It would be beneficial if it did, but lacking an index does not detract from the enjoyment of reliving the Milwaukee Brewers of yore.
