An excellent and inexpensive recording interface, November 5, 2010

The Audio Genie II from American Audio is an excellent and inexpensive device with a phono input as well as a line input. The drivers are all built in that are necessary for operations as you simply plug it into a USB port or hub on your computer. It is all powered as well with the USB. You can use most recording software programs to record and with
Sound Forge and Audacity, the classic drivers that come with these programs are microphone based and the mic drivers work perfectly in these programs. The ASIO4ALL driver that can be downloaded on the WWW is the best way that this device works with
Adobe Audition, but this is no big deal as there is a hardware setup that makes it easy to change from your sound card to the ASIO4ALL. At least I can do needle drops on my computer without having to use my mixer or stereo receiver as a preamp. If you are on a budget and want a decent USB recording interface, this is worthy of consideration in spite of its flaws.
Note: If you want to record into a cassette deck, standalone CD recorder, etc. using this, there is an output that is made for this. The best way to hear the audio out of your speakers if you use this is to use a
3.5mm to RCA Stereo Female Cable - 6 inch cable hooked up to the line input if you use onboard sound, and a
Piggyback stereo RCA cable out of the player into the Audio Genie, and then a standard RCA stereo cable in the piggyback jacks and then into the sound card, or you can use a
M-Audio Fast Track USB 2 Computer Audio Interface and a
1/4" Stereo Plug To 2 RCA Female Adapter Cable 6", plug the adapter in the back of the Fast Track, and then hook it up the same way but instead of the line input in the back of the computer, plug it in the back of the M-Audio Fast Track which does plug into a USB input in your computer. If you wish to hook up your computer speakers if 2 channel stereo or surround sound in your Fast Track, I recommend the use of a
Samson S-amp Four Channel Headphone Amp plugged in, a
GE Stereo Headphone Adapter 3.5mm Jack To 1/4IN Plug - GE 22603 plugged in to the stereo input of the S-amp and then use a
3.5 MM (1/8") Stereo Cable Male to Male 6 Feet out of the headphone output of the Fast Track and into the stereo input of the S-amp. Then use another
GE Stereo Headphone Adapter 3.5mm Jack To 1/4IN Plug - GE 22603 in the headphone output of the S-amp and then hook up the computer speakers the same way you would hook them up if you used the onboard audio, but instead of hooking them up in the onboard audio, you would plug the cable into the headphone output of the S-amp. With the S-amp, there are 4 outputs so you can hook up many computer speakers including most 5.1 computer speaker setups up to the S-amp plus your headphones into the S-amp.
