Book Description

April 2000 0786407778 978-0786407774
America's most celebrated authors are immortalized not only in their writing but also in the museums, libraries, and other memorials dedicated in their honor. Over 260 authors and the sites devoted to them are covered in this guide. The sites, ranging from restored historic homes to memorial statues, are arranged by state. Each entry describes the site and its history, placing it within the context of the author's life and career. Directions are provided to help the reader reach each site; telephone numbers, admission prices, and hours are also included for the traveller's convenience. The text is illustrated with 197 photographs and illustrations from these historic and literary homes, libraries, and other important memorial locations. An index allows easy reference to multiple sites devoted to one author.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This "labor of love" began with Biggers's first pilgrimage to an author's home in 1977 for a class trip. Seeing William Faulkner's Rowan Oak inspired Biggers, a retired English teacher, to continue her explorations of writers' homes. Her passion flowed from schooldays to vacations, and the original search for homes of "illustrious writers" expanded to include contemporary authors as well as those of children's books. Arranging the guide in an easy-to-follow formatDalphabetically, by state and locationDBiggers has included numerous photographs of significant buildings and commemorative stamps that add a little zip to the mix. She also does a better-than-average job of injecting each location with interesting facts about her chosen authors. The index reads like a Who's Who of American literature, but it would have been nice if all the sites had been listed under the relevant author's name. The main objection, however, is that two of the 50 states, Alaska and Hawaii, are missing. Overall, this intriguing and informative guide is a worthwhile addition for large travel and/or American literature collections.DJanet Ross, Sparks Branch Lib., NV
