5.0 out of 5 stars American Bears, August 30, 2010

Sam Adams (Minnesota. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Bears: Selections from the Writings of Theodore Roosevelt (Paperback)

The Introduction by Paul Schullery is an informative 22 page article, with an additional 10 pages of endnotes, on Roosevelt as a hunter and bear naturalist. The selections by Roosevelt are taken from the following places:

"The Black Bear." The Wilderness Hunter, 1893. pp. 255-64
"Old Ephraim, The Grizzly Bear." The Wilderness Hunter. pp. 265-95
"The Bear's Disposition." Trail and Campfire, 1897. pp. 230-37
"A Cattle Killing Bear." Good Hunting, 1907. pp. 27-37
"A Black Bear Hunt in the Selkirks." The Wilderness Hunter. pp. 136-39
"Old Ephraim." Hunting Trips of a Ranchman, 1885. pp. 140-86
"Hunting the Grizzly." The Wilderness Hunter. pp. 296-334
"A Man-Killing Bear." The Youth's Companion, 1883. p 354
"A Mysterious Enemy." The Wilderness Hunter. pp. 441-47
"Bears in the Yellowstone." Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter, 1905. pp. 347-51
"A Colorado Bear Hunt." Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter. pp. 76-111
"In the Louisiana Canebreaks." Scribner's Magazine, 1908. pp. 47-60

In his Introduction, Schullery writes: "Roosevelt recognized the magic of the bear, and of its endless appeal to the public mind. He returned to it again and again in his writings, finally amassing a body of information on bears that stands as the finest contribution by a single author to our knowledge of bear habits and hunting prior to the work of William Wright." (Wright is the author of "The Grizzly", previously reviewed, and "Ben, The Black Bear", both published in 1909.)

This book was written by our 26th President, Theodore Roosevelt. TR did much for conservation in America, he tells of hunting bear and of the missed shots. This book in a great read, it covers black bear and grizzlys. it is a classic. That's why I give this book 5*

This review is from: American Bears: Selections from the Writings of Theodore Roosevelt (Paperback)
This is a good selection of articles on bears and bear hunting by
Theodore Roosevelt. While some of the selections seem dated, they
all bear the Roosevelt flair. Good reading for the armchair or actual
hunter.
