For those that love Bruce's folk work (as I do) then this will definitely keep you coming back time and time again.
Lunar Boulevard
A very, VERY catchy number, the best song on this E.P. in my opinion.

This truly fine E.P., Bruce's release for Record Store Day this year (along with his uncredited playing on Ronnie Spector's superb 1977 single reissue), this features three definite outtakes for the underrated High Hopes album, a great album excepting "This Is Your Sword," and one more song that may have been re-recorded for that ("Hurry Up Sundown", it's uncertain here).

The title track here is a very Stones-y song, that shares the exact same melody - but slower - as Frankie Fell In Love, which itself is based on Little Steven's Lost Boys' song "Affection" from his great lost Lost Boys CD, "Nobody Loves And Leaves Alive." (All three have a very Rolling Stones sound, none more than the Lost Boys; it's on the Sopranos' "Peppers And Eggs" soundtrack if you haven't heard it).

Bruce plays a million instruments on this really lush, beautiful production.
He is joined on this by a name I recognize; the drummer from The Vandals, who is also on "Hurry Up Sundown". Both artists did Heartbreak Hotel live, makes sense.

Mary Mary has the basic rhythm as "We Take Care of Our Own," though more in the style of the song "Leah" from the Devils and Dust album. The chorus gives pause as to how original this is, or if Mike Nesmith deserves a credit. But it overall sounds nothing like The Monkees' song, or the Paul Butterfield Blues Band song, of the same name.
Thank goodness Bruce held onto this song, or we might never have had the incredible "We Take Care Of Our Own" from the GREAT Wrecking Ball album.
A song originally recorded for Magic, about a man missing a woman named Mary - Bruce's favorite female name. Probably the least substantial song on this record.

If you weren't lucky (or motivated enough) to spend April 19 scouring a local record store for this limited EP then thankfully it's available for download, a nice touch for fans and a bargain for some pretty fun Bruce recordings that were left off of High Hopes.

"American Beauty" is the kind of rough-and-tumble rock that Springsteen does so well, a thundering slice of power pop that finds him singing in a unique range with plenty of energy. "Mary Mary" is quite infectious with its gentle strings and infectious groove. For those that love Bruce's folk work (as I do) then this will definitely keep you coming back time and time again. "Hurry Up Sundown" is another raucous rock piece that wouldn't have sounded out of place on The Rising or Magic. "Hey Blue Eyes" is a darker and more political song that I don't find to be all that memorable but I can't deny that it's well done. Nothing is a surprise or revolutionary but as a whole it's a fine collection of songs that Bruce felt needed to be released. Had these been included on High Hopes in place of some of that record's other tracks I probably would have enjoyed it more.

Whether you were fortunate enough to get a physical copy of this or you simply download the MP3 it's a great treat for fans and another fine example of Springsteen putting out music as fast as he can make. That's never a bad thing.

American Beauty, songs from High Hopes and from the past decade in Bruce's career, shows how different High Hopes would be If these 4 songs were added on. "Mary Mary" shows how Bruce can still rely on violin's and Cello's to get a story across. "Hurry up Sundown" Is a playful pop tune, gives off a vibe of "Magic" and "American Beauty" is just as good. "Hey Blue Eyes" is one of Bruce's darkest political songs. I very much enjoyed it. this EP proves that Bruce has not lost his touch. A definite buy for any real Bruce fan!!

I simply can't say even one thing about Springsteen or this album that hasn't already been said a million times. Exactly what do you say about greatness and talent? As far as I am willing to go is to say his music has brought me hours of happiness, some tears and lots and lots of "sing along time" - (and yes I'm glad nobody can hear that last part) :) What else can you ask for? Great is great!

Bruce's cast-offs are better than a million other songs on the radio and internet!
This guy sweats diamonds and I'm happy to hear what he'll release next.

This review is for fans only who have not bought or heard this EP. Buy this just for "Hey, Blue Eyes" which is the kind of song I did not think Bruce could write any more. Listen to it for yourself or buy it for a buck, but it delivers the kind of immediate yearning, questing, angry spirit that characterized the best songs on "The River". That's it. Just a head's up. If his music still has meaning for you, what are you waiting for. Support our local artists when they have something significant to say.

Nice mix of styles from the Boss - a pair of rockers, a relaxed ballad and strong lyrics in all 4. Like many great creative people in their later years, Bruce seems to be as prolific as ever in his songwriting and repertoire of unreleased gems.

Leave it to Bruce to continue to release a great selection of songs. I would recommend this EP to anyone.
