Rachel Marsden's first novel is a perfect read for intellectuals with interest in politics. You will experience a crush on Catherine Carson, a highly intelligent no-nonsense tough-as-nails take-no-prisoners political consultant and analyst with model looks and deep emotional insecurities. After a brief meteoric career at BUX News, Catherine leaves NYC for Paris, where she falls hard for Alex, a charming and talented French politician and writer with a psychopathic streak and an insatiable addiction to serial cheating. Graphic scenes of hot extramarital sex follow, complete with references to AIDS and condom use. Thanks to one particularly funny semi-gaffe, the reader will have to deduce that the lover managed to "get in Catherine's panties" only symbolically, given that she wasn't wearing any when he offered her a scooter ride earlier that evening. Even though the Jesuit-educated Canadian protagonist considers herself a conservative and casually discusses Jesus and Pontius Pilate, she does not bother to go to church, confess her sins and get spiritual advice. Instead, she uses an IUD and frequents a local gym. Physical fitness comes in handy when Catherine is mugged in the streets of the decadent French capital. Early on, the reader realizes that the main character never learned to turn the other cheek. Deliciously vindictive and fiercely independent, Catherine Carson engages herself in spying, while an Obama-hating CIA agent finds her a consulting gig at the administration of Nikolai Kuvasz, an eccentric and clueless right-wing President of France burdened with a jealous supermodel wife. Clearly, none of these adventures are going to end well, yet the reader keeps wishing that they never end. Enjoy this high tempo piece of thinly-veiled documentary prose a la Truman Capote spiced up with not-so-subtle influences of Henry Miller and Simone de Beauvoir!

Not hard to see the motivation in this write up. Rachel Marsden is a very intelligent political pundit from Canada. She speaks impeccable french. I find her incredibly sexy. She now makes her living as a Paris based freelance journalist. Not too shabby. As much as I adore her, the premise of this book is just too obvious. It's about her former employer Fox News (she refers to them as "Bux News"). Rachel didn't leave Fox News on good terms and this is her rebuttal. She has no argument because the Fox News format works. They are a phenomenon. She ridicules Fox News importance to All American Good Looks, but everybody knows that a 100 Megyn Kelly's will outdraw 100 Rachel Maddows 10 times out of 10. It's TV. Outspoken, charismatic, right wing pundits like O'reilly and All American beauties with brains. That's a winning formula. Rachel was maybe just in the wrong place. Sooner or later, everybody figures out where they belong by trying things. She should be thankful they gave her a chance. Or at least that's the way I see it.
