A complete waste of energy and cash!,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
I rated it one star cuse I couldn't rate it with a negative. I found this book to be a huge farse filled with misinformation. It's use a a heat source (burning it) will serve me better than the reading inside! No wonder the author is no longer breeding American Bulldogs and has left the breed for (African Boerboel) another Rare breed. How long before he writes a book on the Boerboel? I know I won't buy it! Try Gladiator Dogs as it is a much better read on the American Bulldog.

Its a good book but too brief to satisfy a real enthusiast.,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
As I said it is too brief. Most of the information is insufficient and it doesn't describe the different strains of bulldog i.e Johnson/scott and standard. More pictures are needed and the fact is the training tips are not bulldog specific. Most trainers will train a bulldog differently from other breeds so its wrong to treat the bulldog as just another dog. It isn't! Its the best breed ever!It is a good buy though, for there is a great lack of other books.

A good enough "beginner" book, but that's all.,

This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
This book gives a synposized historic review of the AB's, talks a bit about the breeds characteristics and has some good pictures of some "famous" ABs, but most (I'd say 80%) of the book is dedicated to generic, overall dog care. It's a cookie-cutter book -- you could plug in any breed info. in the first few chapters -- and then market the book in the appropriate breed section. This is a decent enough introduction to the breed, but only that. It's not a terrible book, it's just not very good as a breed-specific reference. In fact, anyone seriously considering an AB isn't going to get enough out of this book about THIS breed to honestly help them out -- and this is a breed you need to know before you take one into your life! As noted by other reviewers, for those who really want some serious information on AB's, buy the Working American Bulldog, which is a GREAT book -- maybe the ONLY widely-available book that gives in-depth information about the breed's history, temperament and qualities.

Not bad, but not the best... Good buy for the newcomer,
By Claudiano (Sao Paulo, Brasil) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
The book is not bad as some say.Indeed, it provides good information specially for those new to the breed (new owners, new breeders, etc) about the history, pictures, facts, etc. The second half of the book is breed-independent (health, food, puppies, trainning, etc), but again, is quite good for the newcomer. Bottom line. Get both (American Bulldogs and The Working American Bulldog). I DO recomend both for all of my customers. Claudiano

You get only 10% of what you want to know about the breed,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
This book should only cost 10% of its price, because only 10% of its content is actually devoted to the American Bulldog breed. Don't blame the author, though. As with other T.F.H. publications under this series, the latter 90% of the book is "standard" content. You can buy a book about a Rottweiler and find the same 90% "standard" section (expect a lot of write-up about NYLABONE and its allied products)in it, with only the 1st 10% section devoted to the breed. YOU CAN GET MORE VALUABLE information from the few good web sites in the internet.

Basic Dog Book,
By Mary (NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
The first three chapters of this book talk about American Bulldogs, the fourth gets a little sketchy, Chapters 5 - 12 don't even mention the words American Bulldog; it's all generic "dog talk" after that. Not really what we were expecting since training, and working with, the breed is not quite the same as trying to train a peekapoo.

More information needed,
By A Customer

This book is very vague and for lack of another source, it was the only reason I bought it. True bulldoggers know the facts of this breed. Maybee someday John Germeroth of Colorado will inspire us with his knowledge and training ability

Informative,
This review is from: American Bulldogs (KW-221) (Hardcover)
This is a well - written, informative book on the American Bulldog breed. As a Bulldog owner, I found this book very enlightening, especially because this breed is not well known and information is hard to come by. There are several color pictures of American Bulldogs of all ages, as well as detailed information about the origins of the breed, the breed standard, and caring for your Bulldog. There are also several sections on general dog care that would benefit any dog owner, new or experienced. Anyone who already owns a Bulldog or is interested in getting one should own this book.

should have brought another book on my trip...,
By FL Bill "FLB" (St. Petersburg, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Bulldogs (Paperback)
I liked the book just fine for the first few chapters, which were just about AB's. As far as house traing, health, and other issues I found this book to be very basic. Could apply to any breed of dog. I got this book right before a trip I took to California last month. After the first half of the book it was like any other dog book I read. (I read lots of puppy/dog books recently) I lost intrest then. It even tells you that certian chapters are not Blakwell's work but used with premission from 'other resources.' Which are not about AB's, and anyone with an AB knows, OUR dogs ARE different! (your AB even sit on your foot and look up at you like it knowes you own it, with love? (you know what I mean)If you want a generic puppy book then try 'puppy preschool' or one of the hundreds of other dog books.
