About the Author

The daughter of a pioneer printer and newspaper editor, Muriel Sue DeGaa Upfill grew up in Willows, California. At the beginning of World War I, she moved to Washington, D.C., to work as a civil service secretary. An illness--and her wanderlust--took her first to Honolulu and then to Shanghai. There she met and married New Zealander Lindsay Upfill, known affectionately to all as "Uppy." At first based in Calcutta, India, the couple soon moved to Rangoon, Burma, where they lived until the onset of World War II.
