Book Description

This book is about and written by American and Canadians living in Mexico.

Several years ago I posted a blurb to several Yahoo Groups representing several cities in Mexico. In the post I used the term expatriate in reference to Americans living in Mexico. One gentleman took offense. He replied to the post that he was not an expatriot just because he lived in Mexico. He went on to state that he loved his country and that he was still a Patriot. He failed to notice the difference in the spelling of the two words.

The word “Expatriate” is defined in a number of dictionaries and other sources as Wikipedia defines it, “In its broadest sense, an expatriate is any person living in a different country from where he or she is a citizen.”

For the purpose of this Anthology, we will use the Wikipedia definition.

This book is a compilation of writings by Americans and Canadians living in Mexico either full time or part time.

As the author of several chapters and the compiler of this anthology I feel that the reader will gain valuable insight into the expatriate experience. Beyond the reading, the readers of these contributions have the opportunity to go directly to the websites of the various contributors to communicate directly with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Spin In This Book August 31, 2012

As an advocate of Mexico Retirement I've probably read more books on Mexico than Mr. Carter has pills. I loved this book. I liked the "tell it like it is" experiences the authors shared. This was a fun, informative, and straight from the shoulder book all for less than the price of a Big Mac and drink in the USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Single Gringa in Mexico August 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Having lived in 3 different communities in Mexico that had both American & Canadian Expat people. I find this a very interesting read of many different views about our lives here in Mexico, why we are here, how we live our lives and why we stay. It is all here in these pages, a must read if you're considering being a Expat south of the border in Mexico. BekkaA Single Gringa in Mexico

This book is composed of many interesting articles and stories about Mexico. It should be called "A Taste of Mexico," no food to eat but food for thought.

It takes you from Oaxaca to Cabo to Ensenada. It speaks of traditions and celebrations and tips on traveling in Mexico.

The excerpt form "A Single Gringa..." was very interesting. I gifted my daughter with a copy because she's single and thinking of traveling around Mexico.

It also speaks to today's reality of the violence in Mexico making the readers know that there is violence but it's sensationalized by the press.

The book went a long way in giving me a better understanding of the country. I've heard rumors of a second volume or a sequel. I hope it's true.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected... October 3, 2012

I opened this with low expectations, as it is written by amateurs about various places and experiences in Mexico, where I happen to live happily. Yes, I found it more interesting, informative and better written than expected. Plus, the price was right--FREE! If you want folksy, you will like this book. I actually ended up enjoying reading these anecdotes about my adoptive country.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview August 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Actually, I was surprised at the diversity of the writings. And the honesty. Some of the writers jumped right into why they prefer living in Mexico, a topic that is sometimes controversial. I loved that they did it, and I love that readers can read their perspectives. I'm happy to have bought this book. I recommend you buy, and more importantly, read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read for anyone interested in Mexico August 24, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This was an enjoyable read and I highly recommended it to anyone who is considering living in Mexico or even just taking a trip there. The book shares perspectives from people who are "living the dream". It is interesting to learn why the different contributors chose to live there and what made them decide on a particular city. It's fascinating to read about their experiences there and each writer has a unique style that makes the journey feel that much more personal.

There is plenty to learn from these writings. Tourists looking for something "off the beaten path" will benefit from the local knowledge of the expats living there. There is a very well-written and detailed section about Oaxaca by Alvin Starkman. John Scherber and George Puckett's takes on crime in Mexico and how it is portrayed by the American media offer some food for thought. I also enjoyed reading Carol Billups' advice on how to make the most of a trip to Cabo, especially the part about food.

Overall, this is a worthwhile read for anyone with ties to Mexico.

More About the Author

Mexico-Adventure of a Lifetime

Like many Americans and Canadians, George and Tina Puckett decided to retire to Mexico. After careful planning, they settled on Ensenada, a picturesque city on Mexico's Baja Coast. This location enabled them to experience true Mexican life while still being within easy reach of the business they owned in the U.S
.
Why Mexico? Because it is a third world country right at our southern border. Make no mistake: when you cross the international border from Texas, Arizona, or California, you are entering a third world country.

Why Mexico? Because we are African Americans, and it was fascinating to live in a country where non-whites were in charge. The government is not without its problems, bribes, and corruption, but we have our share of that here in the good old USA as well.

Why Mexico? Because we could afford to live in a home a stone's throw from the Pacific where we could watch the dolphins in the distance, see pelicans diving for their dinner, and observe the whales going south for the winter to spawn in warmer waters. We could easily afford the luxury of a weekly housekeeper and other services which were particularly costly in the US.

Why Mexico? Because the Mexican people are so friendly and accommodating. They are remarkably tolerant of the Americans trying to learn their language and even those Americans that are ignorant of the Mexican customs and traditions.

"Why not Mexico?"

My first book, "Baja Diaries-Chronicles of a Paradise Lost" was written about this 7 year period of our lives. I am currently working on a sequel to the "Baja Diaries..." The title is, "Our Sons Our Dreams." Hopefully it will be finished by the end of January and certainly by Valentine's Day.
