Book Description

May 1991 0899505511 978-0899505510
There are 56 capitol structures in the United States and its territories-and this book has 56 entries about all aspects of their genesis, construction and use including the political origins and history of each governmental unit and the story of how each site was selected (with all the political maneuvering and attempts at personal aggrandizement). Facts about the edifices themselves are in abundance-chronologies of construction, personnel (architects, contractors, others), costs, square footage, principal contents and features (e.g., art work, furnishings, interior and exterior finish), annual maintenance and tour information.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hauck provides detailed historical profiles of the capitol buildings of the 50 U.S. states and the federal government in Washington, D.C., plus those for American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The profiles, which average four to six pages and are arranged alphabetically, include an enormous amount of fascinating minutiae. The reader learns, for instance, that Maryland's first official statehouse "was a frame clapboard building of one story with a finished loft. It had a half addition on the rear, was 40 feet wide by 68 feet long. Its construction cost 250,000 pounds of tobacco." American Capitols is up to date, authoritative, and recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could Have Should Have Been Better, January 6, 2006
This book was a bit of a disappointment, the text is informative, but the poor black and white images are really quite awful, and not every state capitol comes with an image, which is very odd in a book of this kind..the book feels like a ph.d disertation that was bound into a book, the physical book is quite second rate in quality, though the text is scholarly..could have, should have been better...seriously over priced.
