Editorial Reviews

Review

"American Circumstance kept me up! I couldn't put it down. I wanted to see how the characters' lives untangled.  I loved how Leavy challenged my cultural assumptions. This book would be great to teach. Students will have a lot to talk about as they discover a 'sociology of everyday life'  embedded in the fiction." -- Professor Laurel Richardson, The Ohio State University

"Recently, I read Patricia Leavy's novel American Circumstance. It is wonderful! The characters and story invite you into a world that is both familiar and unfamiliar. While many urgent social issues are raised for thoughtful consideration, the heart of the novel pulses with the experiences and emotions of three women who, while marked by many differences, all share a commitment to living hopefully in love. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole novel--from the first inviting words to the exquisitely poignant conclusion. Highly recommended!!"  Poet, Carl Leggo, University of British Columbia

"American Circumstance had me hooked from page one.  Patricia Leavy creates a compelling, enthralling world that beautifully illustrates what real love and partnership truly is while challenging our assumptions and pushing us to look at our own relationships.  Expertly crafted and engagingly drawn.  Pick this book up!" - Amy Leigh Mercree, Relationship Expert and author of The Spiritual Girl's Guide to Dating: Your Enlightened Path to Love, Sex & Soul Mates

I love reading novels that suck you in instantly. I totally fell in love with the characters in this book and loved being a part of their journey. There is so much depth to the relationships between these women and makes you appreciate the female relationships in your own life. I would highly recommend this book. It is a perfect beach read, but has more layers than you expect.

Format: Paperback
American Circumstance is Patricia Leavy's second novel and represents an author at a very different point in her life.

The novel was as hard to put down as her debut Low Fat Love, indeed I read it in a little under 4 hours lying on the sofa. The story flows rather like a great Mike Nichols movie (think Closer), which is both a compliment and a critique. It's one of those tales that, once you start, you are drawn into in such away that the world disappears and time seems to stand still. There was something about the characters that was so compelling that I couldn't look away, couldn't stop reading; even a bathroom trip seemed like an incomprehensible interruption. I needed to know if these women of a certain age, Paige, Mollie and Gwen, would resolve their issues and grow through the realization that empowerment comes not from self-absorption but from good friendships. But, like a great Nichols flick, I was left frustrated at the open ending, believing I needed closure. Yet, at the same time I love open endings, and the frustration of not having everything tied up in a neat bow, it forces the story to stay with you for a long time afterwards as you try to imagine where their lives will end up.

With Low Fat Love, I saw my friends, my acquaintances and myself in the characters, I saw my life with its unrealistic hopes and dreams, I even related to the music the characters listened to and the places they went. In contrast, with American Circumstances I felt less connected to these characters in whom I saw little of myself or the people I know. That didn't make it less readable of course, but it did make it far less relatable to me, a black woman from a lower-middle class British family.

American Circumstance is the embodiment of a book you can't put down. The struggles and triumphs of Paige, Mollie and Gwen sculpt a relatable plotline, with plenty of surprises along the way, in which every woman can relate to. Leavy gracefully encompasses a sociological perspective within this light-chick lit touching on the complexity of relationships with oneself and others. Definitely a recommendation for all- whether it be a light weekend read or thought-provoking discussion teaser, Leavy's latest work has something for everyone.

This one is a real page-turner. Just when you think you know what's going on, it turns out that events aren't at all what they seem. The three women protagonists, Paige, Molly and Gwen, are "women of a certain age" and, together, they provide the perfect answer to the idea that books and movies have nothing to say about women over 40. I loved these intertwining stories and recognized bits of myself in all the women. A real page turner, with lots of surprises. Get it, set aside a "me time" afternoon and ENJOY!

I wish I could have read this in college! What an engrossing book! From page one I was hooked by the expertly drawn characters and opulent scene setting. I really enjoyed reading American Circumstance. The sociological issues illustrated were interesting and they added to the story. The bird's eye look into the self consciousness of feeling like one's looks aren't quite right will strike a chord in many of us. American Circumstance helps us view our world with greater understanding.
