From Library Journal
Initiated a decade ago, this book is designed for use by cadets in courses at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Opening with an excellent introductory chapter by Roy K. Flint, the book includes coverage of social, political, and economic aspects of the Civil War. The strength of the book is in operational military history, and it presents well-argued evaluations of the war's commanders and campaigns. The volume is profusely and effectively illustrated with well-chosen prints and photographs. The annotated select bibliography will be helpful to students and general readers. Recommended for libraries that want a recent one-volume history of the Civil War. Joseph G. Dawson III, History Dept., Texas A&M Univ., College Station
