This review is from: The American Civil War (3): The War In The East 1863-1865 (Essential Histories) (Vol 2) (Paperback)
Robert Krick is perhaps the most engaging author I have yet found in the Essential Histories series. He makes this one of the most enjoyable reads of the collection. In this volume, the focus is almost exclusively on the Virginia theatre, from the time of Stonewall Jackson's death (at the end of vol 1) through Robert E Lee's surrender at the Appomattox courthouse. Krick's writing brings this story to life and makes this volume particularly pleasant and easy to read. Interestingly, and unusually for most Civil War historians, Krick comes off as being more sympathetic with the Confederacy's than the Union's leadership. As Lee's generals consistently outmaneuver and outfight those from the North, but gradually get worn down by the vastly greater resources of Grant, the underlying tone here seems to be one of admiration for Confederate tactics and denigration of Northern incompetence. A very interesting and informative perspective that should please both scholars and newcomers to Civil War history. And, as usual for the Essential Histories collection, this volume contains lots of wonderful pictures and photos of many of the important individuals involved and of particular moments described in the text. Very highly recommended!
