Book Description

Men-at-Arms October 18, 2011
Uniformed volunteer units were raised by individuals, usually from an area's social élite who had enough spare money and time to spend on such enthusiasms. They voted on their unit designation, their officers and non-commissioned officers, their unit rules, and their uniform. Many future leaders learned their skills in these ranks, and volunteer militia units formed the core of many fighting units on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. With the help of numerous photographs and illustrations, including eight full page colour plates by Ron Volstad, Philip Katcher does a fine job of detailing the uniforms of the volunteer militia of the American Civil War (1861-1865).

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book!!, August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This book provides information for reenactors, people that paint toy soldiers, and people that love to read. I enjoyed this book a lot. When I got it, I began to look it over from front to back. This series of books is a must for Civil War buffs. I've looked at other books in this series and I loved them too! This book shows color pictures of uniforms and soldiers. It also has black and white photographs of guns, cap pouches, cartridge boxes, haversacks, and jackets. Again, i thought that this book was GREAT!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Resource for Re-enactors and Scale Modelers, June 23, 1999
By A Customer
This little book is an invaluable reference for the re-enactor and the newly emerging 1/6th scale modeler. "American Civil War Armies: Confedrate Troops" is a first rate example from the Osprey Series. The Osprey Companion Series (Men-At Arms, Warrior, New Vanguard, Campaign, and Elite), is simply a staple for basic information on military uniforms and equipment. By no means exhaustive, they provide enough clearly outlined and well illustrated information to create quality reproductions of classic military uniforms and equipment. The illustrations are rich and colorful, and really bring those uniforms to life like photographs simply cannot. And even if you are not a modeler or re-enactor, the history buff will benefit from reading the books in this series, as one cannot really get a clear picture of military history without understanding the conditions under which soldiers lived and fought. The uniforms and equipment they used are the basics of that understanding.
