4.0 out of 5 stars A Fond Farewell, February 17, 2000
This review is from: American Classic (Audio CD)
Appropriately named, this recording is an apropos tribute to one of the unique voices in jazz saxophone. Each cut shows off one of Dex's trademarks-- the ability to "quote" from other song melodies (too bad the young players of today can't learn this important nuance in their playing). Dex's intelligence in selection of the material, and choices throughout his solos, shines through. Also welcome is the support of a first-rate rhythm section to propel the Master. The man's dominance of his instrument (that classic tone even well into his golden years), and mastery of the songs, are well documented here in a proper, and fitting, scenario. Now Johnny Griffin and Illinois Jacquet are all that is left of the cadre of great tenormen spawned in the 40's and 50's.
