5.0 out of 5 stars The best medical encyclpedia/guide I have ever seen
First let me say that I used to have the classic AMA Encyclopedia of Medicine for years from 1989 edition, and finally the AMA released a newer book, but it is certainly not as good as the first one and not as good as this ACP Med Guide. Just go to any bookstore and open any page and you'll see what I mean.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor scientific assessment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
I am familiar with the research on CFS, the authors of this book clearly are not. That leads me to question the validity of the other entries.

The AMA hardly has any photos in the text and is not as nearly richly illustrated as the ACP Complete Med Guide.

This book is loaded with so many rich full color photos and illustrations, it is mind boggling. I have worked in the medical field for nearly 10 years and I have never seen some of the photos in this book.

Many photos are close up using electron microscopes that capture spectacular images of cells. I had taken anatomy and physiology I and II in college and never saw an image of a nerve entering a muscle fiber.

There's a ton of images of various diseases that show you for example instantly what a suspicious skin mole might look like.

Every major system in the body is covered exhaustively by diagrams not just showing the anatomy but how the system and each organ work together.

There's a first aid section at the end that illustrates CPR etc.

There's links to relevant websites throughout the text.

Just go browse it at any bookstore.. I could not put it down for two hours!

Well done American College of Physicians and DK publishing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Complete Home Medical Guide-American College of Physicians, November 6, 2003
This review is from: American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (Hardcover)
This home medical guide is a complete rendition which
names diseases, disease processes, diagnostic approaches
and treatment options for practically every conceivable
ailment. The volume is easy to read and it is devoid
of too much medical jargon. There are many pictures depicting
the human anatomy, or portions thereof, in full color.
The approaches to describing the various disease processes
are modern. In addition, the work distinguishes between related
diseases and conditions. A beauty of the work is that it
describes how patients function given the most debilitating
medical conditions presented. For instance,
ankylosing spondylitis causes permanent disability in 1 in 20
patients wherein they lose the ability to do routine
tasks/functions. Basic medical terms are defined exhaustively.
The book is a worthy purchase as a desk reference for
a wide constituency of medical providers and the general
public. This is a worthy addition to your existing medicinal health library. It contains brand new protocols. As such,
I recommend purchasing this volume because it will help you
to formulate the various disease processes encountered into
precise medical language and diagnostic terminology.
Clearly, the volume has been researched thoroughly and it is
ready for general public use. Another feature of the work is
that the authors describe comparative costs for complex
surgeries so that consumers have a basis to compare prices.

5.0 out of 5 stars very good book, November 25, 2007

very user-friendly book. just enough information for a non-medical-professional. Not too much to be digested, not too little to cover everything.

Probably one of the most thorough home medical reference books around. Well cross referenced with the glossary and index pages; 1104 pages in total with color photographs, charts and sketches.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better Than the Competition, April 12, 2010

This review is from: American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (Hardcover)
Better illustrated & easier to understand than the "Merck Manual: Home Health Handbook", but not as complete & has only half as many pages. Has many specific disease photographs & illustrations that are large & in color. I prefer this book over the Merck Manual, one reason being that I prefer the format of this book. This book has a listing for each disease that includes a heading with a brief description of the disease, along with age, lifestyle, gender, & genetics factors. Then, there is a more complete discussion of the disease, & sections concerning "What are the causes?", "What are the symptoms?", "Are there complications", & "What might be done?" (to help). I can't vouch for the accuracy of the information given, but the book has proven helpful on many occasions & has been a worthwhile buy for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful At-Home Tool, December 1, 2008

This review is from: American College of Physicians Complete Home Medical Guide (Hardcover)
This is a great book, my mother had one years ago and recently updated to the newer version. My husband and I are now expecting our first child, so naturally I wanted to get a copy for our home. It is a great reference tool to have at home. Just remember to be cautious sometimes because it is not always going to be correct, but still makes a great starting point.
