Poster Book of U.S. 'Nam Warbirds!,
By
This review is from: The American Combat Aircraft and Helicopters of the Vietnam War (Hardcover)
This oversized volume published by Orion Books in 1987 consists of full-color illustrations of American aircraft and helicopters used during the Vietnam War. The book is designed so individual prints can be removed and framed by readers wanting poster-sized prints of F-4s, B-52s, F-100s, etc. Interesting idea but...
On the plus side, artist Pierluigi Pinto offers up a wide variety of subjects including the F-4B, T-28D, F-102A, A-6A, B-57B, A-1H, F-5A, ACH-47A, OV-10A, AH-1G, F-104C, UH-1B, F-8J, HH-53C, A-37B, etc. Cutting out a single-page image produces an artwork measuring 10" x 15" in all. About a third of the illustrations - including the B-52D, F-105D, F-111A - are two-page spreads; producing a 21" x 15" image. Each illustration has a description of the warbird on the back. On the other side of the coin, in terms of the accuracy of the drawing and of the camouflage scheme, the book gets mixed marks. The drawings are "kinda/sorta" accurate; several have noticeable errors. Likewise the paint schemes seem fair approximations at best. The book also includes an eight-page summary of the Vietnam War and 14 pages of technical specs. The text, which was translated from Italian, makes for clunky reading. THE AMERICAN COMBAT AIRCRAFT AND HELICOPTERS OF THE VIETNAM WAR is available in both hardcover and paperback editions at quite reasonable prices. It's a mixed bag but, overall, does give the reader a colorful smorgasbord of American warplanes that flew in the Vietnam War. Recommended.
