Gr 5 Up Beginning with a statement of purpose and a quick organizational sketch, Gilbo writes clearly, concisely, and postively about the Red Cross. The content outline closely parallels that of Gilbo's earlier book, The American Red Cross: the First Century (Harper, 1981; o.p.), but the vocabulary and details have been pared down to appeal to younger readers or those who prefer a more succinct account. Most of the black-and-white photographs and reproductions also appeared in the earlier book. Gilbo's updating includes information about AIDS research as it relates to the blood supply. Gilbo is obviously a Red Cross supporter and avoids controversy in his discussion. Libraries that have Gilbo's 1981 history will still want this one, as they are targeted for different audiences.
