From the Studio

Revisit American Erotic Cinema’s Age of Innocence... Male fascination with erotica is probably as old as intelligent human life. In fact, archeologists have found crudely crafted erotic cave drawings that date back to before the Bronze Age. It is unclear when the first signs of stigma against erotic art first cropped up, or when the term ‘pornography’ was first used. Many psychologists believe that the bias against such depictions has done more harm than good, stating that the human being is primarily a sexual animal and that repression of natural instincts is the source of a lot of mental sickness in modern society. Be that as it may, it is obvious that sexual art (which has taken on an amazing plethora of forms today) is here to stay. The invention of cinematography was, of course, a ‘giant stride forward.’ Before World War II, ‘stag films’ were already a popular and firmly entrenched underground entertainment genre. Compared to the explicit fare available today, these were pretty tame and could even be termed ‘innocent’ by modern standards. They were invariably shot with 16mm film and did not place a great deal of importance on camera technique, storyline or acting talents - nor were they generally longer than eight to ten minutes in duration. Nevertheless, they found ready takers. Their popularity waned towards the end of the ‘50s, as hardcore pornography edged these risqué black-and-white offerings out of business. This fascinating DVD features a courageous roots-to-branches retrospective of short erotic films that are appealing without edging into the outrageous. It is suitable and non-offensive viewing for adults (ages 18+) This intriguing collection of short underground ‘stag’ clips has been especially selected to offer you a true cross-section of early amateur erotic cinema. It takes you to a glamorous stripper’s stage, on to a secret ‘initiation ceremony’ in a co-ed dormitory and other voyeuristic perspectives from a bygone age.

Product Description

There is still a school of thought that feels that too much importance is being given to pseudo-moralistic issues, and that the sexual impulse must be acknowledged and not repressed. The film clips on this highly interesting DVD, however, were obviously not made to further counter the spirit of Victorian Puritanism - their purpose was to entertain, and to cater to a ready market for erotic films. As such, it is fascinating to see how tastefully and artistically restrained some of them are. There is no denying a certain degree of amateurism and lack of directorial finesse, but we must keep in mind the age from which they hail - the ‘50s are now officially a historical era in film making. A2ZCDS has managed to compile a collection of short ‘stag’ (men only) films that is an accurate cross-section of trends in erotica popular in that turbulent, formative period. The depicted female subjects are, to a greater extend, unquestionably sexy and refreshingly uninhibited.! Particularly impressive is the bold enactment of voyeuristic male fantasies in such clips as ‘Co-ed Secrets’, ‘Peeping Toms’ and ‘Fighten Femme’, which manage to titillate without edging into the grossly obscene or offensive. Throughout, there is an underlying sense that more would be revealed if the director and his cameraman could get away with it. Other offerings like ‘Stripper Scarlett Knight’, ‘Hot Number’ and ‘Two Bells for Victoria’ are frank explorations of attractive female anatomy with few pretensions of artistic elements.

All in all, this collection has both historic and fun value and explores an epoch of innocence in amateur filmmaking that will not repeat itself. For that reason alone, this is an interesting and valuable collector’s item. Owing to the explicit nature of some of the content, it is advised that this DVD be used only by those of ages 18 and above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Number, April 27, 2006

This disk is worth it simply for the track "hot number" alone. The girl in this short track is so hot it doesn't matter that she doesn't take all of her clothes off - it is still very, very sexy.

I got turned on by almost all of the tracks on the disk - which unlike modern erotica has girls with normal bodies (i.e. not super skinny) and leaves something to the imagination.

I was fascinated by how much pubic hair some of the girls had back then. If nothing else this DVD proves that feminine grooming habits have changed a good deal over time.

A quick note - these tracks are sexy, but not dirty.

If you know what I mean....

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Porn - Just Sexy, April 26, 2006
By
This review is from: American Cultural History - Vintage Erotica DVD (DVD)
Finally, something calls itself "erotica" that is actually erotic.

I'm so tired of things calling themselves "erotica" when they really mean "porn."

Real erotica is about sexiness and suggestion - not about seeing people nude and having sex. What I liked about these films - most of them are fairly short - is that they are sexy withotu being dirty.

I guess that because people in this time didn't see porn all around them they were able to get turned on by films that are nicely naughty.

The girls are very pretty even if the costumes are sometimes silly.

This DVD made me happy.
