Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Named a top health book by Ladies Home Journal, The American Dietetic Association's Complete Food & Nutrition Guide teaches how to combine "good taste and good health" in every meal and snack. No matter how nutritionally impaired you think you are, you'll find clear, understandable information on the basics of metabolism and weight management, vegetarianism, nutrition for athletes, food allergies, and more. The section on eating during pregnancy and breast-feeding is absolutely essential reading for any mom-to-be, as are the chapters on feeding fussy toddlers. If you can't tell radicchio from daikon or don't know how to pronounce quinoa, the superb index will certainly come in handy.

The ADA takes a conservative stance on vitamin and mineral supplements, focusing instead on combining proper foods to maximize absorption, and there's little information about other supplements such as enzymes. But if you need help sorting the food fads from facts, the Complete Food & Nutrition Guide can't be beat. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

The American Dietetic Association, along with Duyff, noted food and nutrition consultant, have written a readable and timely book for the lay reader. Some of the topics discussed are the food pyramid, what to eat (and not eat) while taking prescription medicines, preparing your own baby food, nutritional needs of the elderly, eating ostrich meat, the iron content of foods when cooking in iron pots, and the calories in the glue of a postage stamp. Included is a lengthy resource list of associations/organizations that will provide more information. However, an index is not included, and olestra is only briefly mentioned. Duyff gives sound advice, making this a good addition to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Complete Book of Nutrition (St. Martin's, 1990). Recommended for public libraries.?Connie Weaver, Bosler Free Lib., Carlisle, Pa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Nutrition Guide - and a Good Read!, January 30, 1999

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A "best buy". Keeping 600 pages readable can be difficult, but this book pulls it off. This guide has anything and everything you ever wanted to know about food. It's so complete that I can't think of a big area that's been missed. Some topics addressed: fitness, managing weight, food intolerances, food safety, nutrition(all facets), meal planning, shopping, dining out, senior/women/athlete/vegetarian issues and concerns.

It is filled with practical advice and tips, and is easy to read. It is a thoughtful and factual look at food. If you're looking for quick cures and diet mumbo-jumbo, this is not your book.
