Editors Showalter ( Tannenberg , LJ 10/1/90 and an LJ reviewer) and Albert here present a set of essays on the American effort in Vietnam selected from a military history symposium that took place in October 1990. The writers (Larry Cable, Mark Clodfelter, Phillip Davidson, and Norman Graebner, among others) are all widely published authorities on the conflict and the time. Each essay is a finely crafted examination of one aspect of the war (the air war, Vietnamization, the ground fighting, etc.), including bibliographical references. The editors' analysis of the current state of the historiography of the war deserves special mention. While many public libraries shy away from conference proceedings, they should take a second look at this example. Highly recommended for academic libraries.
