4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful social history view of education in the U.S.
As a masters candidate in Educational Psychology, I found this to be a helpful text to review the history of the educational system in the U.S. The author definitely leaned toward the liberal side, but he was fairly even-handed in his presentation of the people, social and economic conditions that have impacted the organization and delivery of education in this country...

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Biased
As a pretty liberal person I was shocked at how much I hated this book. By the time I reached chapter 9 I would have preferred to get a root canal than finish this book, yet I did manage to finish it. Yes, everyone has a point of view and yes it is nearly impossible to be completely unbiased. But, having said that the authors could have at least tried to show more than...

As a masters candidate in Educational Psychology, I found this to be a helpful text to review the history of the educational system in the U.S. The author definitely leaned toward the liberal side, but he was fairly even-handed in his presentation of the people, social and economic conditions that have impacted the organization and delivery of education in this country. The book was easy to read and full of good references to primary sources of material for further review.

History can be a tough sell to many people as many have experienced the mundane books which are often very dry. This book isn't like that, it offers a fresh view of American history from a perspective of education and how it has evolved. An eye opening experience and objective point of view. The summaries at the end of the chapters may help some preferring a brief overview to stress the key points in a timely fashion. I'm currently a doctoral student in Educational Administration and found this book to be an excellent resource as well. The fold out timeline that comes with the new book is full color and shows many of the individuals that are cited in the book which aids in memory retention for those visual learners out there.

As a pretty liberal person I was shocked at how much I hated this book. By the time I reached chapter 9 I would have preferred to get a root canal than finish this book, yet I did manage to finish it. Yes, everyone has a point of view and yes it is nearly impossible to be completely unbiased. But, having said that the authors could have at least tried to show more than the very narrow minded opinions than they did. Or, actually less would have been more. Just give me the facts and let me draw my own conclusions. This book tried its hardest to make itself "interesting" by inserting colorful adjectives that it was hard to tell what occurred and what was factual. Having said all this, if you have to read it for a course the kindle edition is formatted quite well, and I pity your souls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Arrived quickly!, February 7, 2011
This book arrived very quickly and said it was used, but really was in fine condition, just a little bit of highlighting in some places. Great!

1.0 out of 5 stars do not order from this seller, September 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered a book from this seller on August 16th. By September 2nd, I had not received it and I knew that something was wrong. I sent this seller 2 emails. I never heard back from her. I had to order the book from another seller. Luckily, my credit card was never charged for my order so that was good but I really needed the book for school. I ordered the book from a different seller on September 2nd and it arrived on September 9th. If you want your book within a reasonable amount of time, do not order from this seller.
