Book Description

October 22, 1998
Oxford's American Desk Encyclopedia is the most up to date, affordable, and convenient encyclopedia on the market, offering over 15,000 alphabetically arranged entries that put a world of information within arm's reach.
Virtually any topic you would want information on you will find here. There are numerous biographical entries well over 3,000 in all that cover artists, writers, and composers; military, political, and world leaders; religious and business figures; scientists and inventors, and much more. Readers will find concise entries on geographical places from mountains, rivers, and seas to cities, regions, and nations. Science is perhaps the biggest category covered, encompassing physics, astronomy, chemistry, the environment, mathematics, the life sciences including many entries on animals, plants, and minerals plus hundreds of entries on technology (inventions, machine parts, and so on). There are literary terms, artistic movements, architectural styles, musical periods. Religion and mythology, medicine and health, sports and entertainment, politics and the law--all are covered here. The Encyclopedia also offers an attractive page layout, with hundreds of black-and-white illustrations, plus a sixteen-page color map section. Its compact trim size makes it fit neatly in any convenient space on a desk or on the kitchen counter--ready whenever you need fast information. And finally, the Encyclopedia is a great bargain, a cloth-bound reference work at a paperback price.
Wide ranging, authoritative, portable, affordable, and engagingly illustrated, The American Desk Encyclopedia will be the mainstay of your home or office library.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A cut-down, modestly updated version of the colorfully illustrated Family Encyclopedia (LJ 10/15/97), this compact, single-volume work consists of some 15,000 brief entries complemented by 300 black-and-white drawings, plus a 16-page world atlas. It emphasizes scientific and technical subjects, and the material is reliable, readable, and reasonably current, as entries on gene therapy, Tiger Woods, and the Shroud of Turin attest. Still, librarians will find this little volume much too superficial for their needs. However, like the comparable Concise Columbia Encyclopedia (Houghton, 1994. 3d ed.), it could be useful for quick reference in the home, dorm, or office.AKen Kister, author of "Best Encyclopedias," Tampa, FL

From Booklist

Oxford's American Desk Encyclopedia, the companion volume to The Oxford American Desk Dictionary (1998) and The Oxford American Desk Thesaurus (1998), was, like these two titles, created for the home and middle-school through undergraduate markets. This compact volume contains more than 15,000 entries, 35,000 cross-references that are indicated by capital letters within entries, and 300 illustrations, as well as a 16-page color world atlas. Its format is alphabetical to allow users to locate information quickly. An international team of writers, scholars, and advisors has succeeded in their goal to include and emphasize cultures beyond the English speaking world by including a proportion of entries on international cultures, people, and religion to reflect the idea of a global society.

With an audience of secondary-school students particularly in mind, compilers give greatest emphasis to core subjects such as science and technology, history, humanities, and politics. The entries are written clearly and concisely so younger students, ages 13 or 14, for example, can easily understand concepts that are new to them. For the general or college reader, articles that discuss popular culture topics (film, sports, popular music, and so forth), current events, plants, animals, places, and important individuals are also given coverage. Articles on AIDS and nations are among those that include useful statistics. Country entries include a gray box stating geographic area, population, capital, and the population of the capital for quick reference. All measurements are given in both American and metric units. A brief history of the pertinent letter of the Roman alphabet begins each section. The American Desk Encyclopedia is a worthwhile and affordable purchase for home reference and for public, high-school, and undergraduate libraries needing a reliable one-volume resource for ready reference.
