5.0 out of 5 stars A seldom seen view of the Australian involement in Vietnam, December 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: American Experience Vietnam: Legacies [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This film, directed by John Duigan (Lawn Dogs) and Chris Noonan (Babe)shows the involvement of one Australian family in the Vietnam war. That the father happens to be the Australian Minister of Defense makes the plot a bit 'thicker'. His daughter(Nicole Kidman at 19)is a 'dove' and his son is a reluctant 'Hawk'. The machinations and political and economic motivations are captured with a subtlety unusual for television. The scenes in Vietnam are the blackest of black comedy and disturbingly 'anti-war'. Watching carefully, the viewer soon realizes that this part is a cleverly devised satire on 'Apocalypse Now'. Using 'actors', rather than stars, Duigan and Noonan have enough time to cover many aspects of the Vietnam war in this 10 hour series. Highly recommended for Australians and other nationalities who may not know about the Aussie's heavy involvement in the war.
