A view from the other side of the fence,
By jasenao (Dothan, Alabama, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The American Farewell Tour (Audio CD)
I first found out about this album a few weeks before it was released. I didn't really want to buy For The Record yet because it doesn't have two of my absolute favorite Alabama songs: "Christmas In Dixie" and one of the few songs that can bring a tear to my eye if I'm homesick or in the right mood, "My Home's In Alabama".I tell you, when I saw the track listing for American Farewell Tour, I nearly hit the ceiling. But then I thought about the album's title. I was about 99.99999% sure that it would be a live effort, but if it was all studio work then I'd get it ASAP, I decided. When I found out that it IS the versions of the songs that I've been hearing on the radio all my life, I was rolling on down the highway in my car. I was in a hurry and I knew why--it was to make one of my most eager purchases in recent memory. I couldn't imagine a much better single disc compilation of the boys from Ft. Payne. It packs in 20 songs, including ones that were recorded way back when their legend was just beginning to take form and a few of their most recent hits. There are #1 hits and not quite #1 hits alike, odes to past life and home towns, ballads, and everything in-between. Some songs you can't help but to sing along to, like "I'm In A Hurry (And Don't Know Why)". In "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)", you can tell Alabama was having fun at the time with Randy Owen's yelling that may give you a sense of their live performance style. And yes, of course, the majority of THE most essential Alabama hits are here too, such as "Mountain Music", "Tennessee River", "Song Of The South", and one of my favorite songs of all time: "Love In The First Degree." I can see where fans would be disappointed that this isn't a live effort, especially with the millions of compilations that Alabama has put out. But I'm not one of them. I've never been much of a fan of live albums at all. American Farewell Tour made my wish come true. It includes both old and new, most of the essentials, and the two songs that I wanted on one disc. There are only two compilations from Alabama that I've seen that I would give five stars to, and this is one of them. If you purchase any Alabama compilation apart from For The Record, this one should be it! I've always had pride that I live in the same state that the most successful country group in history comes from, and now I smile with pride and say that I own American Farewell Tour. It serves as an excellent remembrance of an unforgettable group from the Heart of Dixie that made some classic music that will live on forever in the memories of their fans.

Farewell Boys....you'll be missed.,

The title says it all. It's their Farewell Tour album. By producing this album they allow a different variety of songs on one album for their fans. If you didn't get to go to any of their shows on the Farewell Tour, then you wouldn't realize that the songs on this album are songs that they sung on this specific tour. That's why the title says American Farewell Tour. Nowhere does it's a live cd. Please stop your complaining and give my Boys the respect they deserve.

Not Live,
By MRod "Hoosier Music Man" (Indiana via Virginia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The American Farewell Tour (Audio CD)
The cd itself does not say live, BUT, it IS advertised that way and the copy I bought, did have the additional sticker on the front that DID advertise it as LIVE. Good collection from a great band, but if you're a fan, you've probably got every single song on here, and were disappointed that it was not indeed live... Pretty shady marketing... probably no fault of the group, but still deceptive....

I have read these other reviews and disagree totally...this CD is just what it is intended to be..a perfect blend of Albama's music from the beginning to now....as they do in their Concerts this year...it no where says it is LIVE....but still a wonderful choice of Old and New Alabama music...A mixture of some 1980 hits to their last new material in 2001..Some of my very favorites songs and I am sure yours too...

This CD is full of wonderful country songs. My two favorites are #8 "Down Home" and #10 "Give Me One More Shot".
"Down Home" - Even though these guys are talking about their home in Alabama, it reminds me of my own country home. It is a beautiful country song. "Give Me One More Shot" - (They are talking about a shot of life - not a shot of whiskey.) This song is upbeat, positive, and encouraging. It gives a wonderful message. I love it - both the words and the music. "The Fans" (#13) literally gives me goose bumps. It is a beautiful, sweet, touching song. Another goose bumper is #20, "My Home's In Alabama". There are so many other wonderful country songs on this CD, such as "Christmas in Dixie", "Song of the South", "High Cotton", and "Dixieland Delight". This isn't near all of them. There are so many terrific country songs on this one CD. I've never met Alabama, and have never talked to them. But I've talked to people from Ft Payne who do know them, and they all say the same thing: that the guys are wonderful down-home country folk. I think the content of their music also tells a story about who they are. I am definitely a fan of this wonderful country music - both the words and the music.

Another Record Company Trick,
By
This review is from: The American Farewell Tour (Audio CD)
I was all excited when I heard about this release. I *thought* it was going to be a live recording of songs culled from their Farewell Tour. There is certainly no reason to believe otherwise from the title of the album. However, when I get to the store to purchase it, it had a large sticker on the front cover "contains studio versions of songs Alabama is performing on their farewell tour." What kind of garbage is that? How many compilations has this band put out? If I sound angry about this, it is because, plenty of people will order this from Amazon and other online CD stores and not know that they are getting the same studio versions that have been rehashed over and over again. I have lost all respect for this band and am glad they are hanging it up. Why would they call what is essentially another greatest hits album "Farewell Tour?" Buyer beware. If you are looking for a decent hits package, get "For the Record." You get twice as many songs.

you are all wrong!,

You are all wrong. It doesnt say it is a LIVE CD anywhere on the cd so why would you think it was LIVE. This isnt Alabama's fault. blame it on your teachers that were supposed to teach you to read. if you want to keep bashing the greatest country group ever then go ahead but they wont miss you bc you are not real fans.

SUCKERED AGAIN!!!!,

This is the LAST "LIVE" ALBUM I WILL EVER BUY!!!!!! Where's the live part? I already own all the studio versions of these songs!!!! Shame on Alabama for duping their fans in this manner!! STAY RETIRED ALREADY! No doubt their marketing department felt they could dupe fans into thinking they were buying a live album by putting in such a duplicitous name like "American Farewell Tour". Well they suckered me. For the LAST time, I assure you.

Yet another disappointing rehash of studio stuff!,
By Hank "YankeeHank" (Alpharetta, GA United States) - See all my reviews

It's a non-live Tour CD! What kind of retarded marketing scheme is THIS??!! It is absolutely assanine to title a collection of old studio recordings on a "A Farewell Tour" CD. Besides, this has got to be like the 10th hits compilation these guys have put out! Don't get me wrong. I dig their music, and this is a decent single CD compilation, but if you've got the 40 #1s double CD set, what do you need with this? I would have loved to have heard a live concert recording with the song list on this 20 track CD, but that isn't what you get here...
