Book Description

This book brings together 3 key elements for readers. It provides an overview of the historical information to make sense of current U.S. foreign policy; it supplies case studies to give readers grounding in key events in U.S. foreign policy and information on contemporary issues; and it incorporates concepts that structure an investigation into U.S. foreign policy. The focus is on U.S. policy itself and not on U.S. foreign policy toward specific regions or issues. The volume addresses the global, historical and domestic contexts of American policy, foreign affairs government, how the constitution, presidency and congress relate to foreign affairs, foreign policy making and policy tools and alternative futures. For those interested in a thorough, up-to-date, yet concise presentation of American foreign policy.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This text integrates case studies and conceptual material to give students a historical perspective of U.S. foreign policy. It develops an understanding of both the hows of the foreign policy making process as well as the whys, challenging students to consider the ways in which foreign policy will need to change in the future. The Third Edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect the latest challenges facing American foreign policy in the post-cold war world. It also contains increased attention to the role of the media and domestic influences; lessons from the Persian Gulf War; decision-making material on NAFTA; and a new chapter on post-Vietnam foreign policy. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars American Foreign Policy: Past, Present, Future, September 25, 2000
Hastedt's book is a well worded and actually rather objective perusal of American foreign policy from its root in the 18th century to President Clinton's decisions to go into Bosnia. I read this book towards the beginning of this year and was surprised about how up to date it was. The writing is very easy to follow and the book follows a very strong methodological format -- beiniing with the theoretical underpinnings of US foreign policy, then on to its early history, then to models of decisionmaking. This section as well is quite good -- it shows the decisionmaking models in the context of the Cuban Millsile crisis, Grenada, and also some about Bush and Desrt Storm/Desert Shield. The section on the Cuban Missile Crisis itself is somewhat misleading, but Halstedt's greatest strength is his assesments of the future of American international engagement.
