This best-selling text presents the best synthesis of current scholarship available to emphasize the theme of expansionism and its manifestations. The inclusion of recently declassified documents allows for new perspectives on American intervention in the Bolshevik Revolution, the origins of the Cold War and the Korean War, and the Cuban missile crisis. The Sixth Edition includes strong coverage of gender and culture and explores the racial dimensions of American expansionist ideology. Up-to-date coverage of national security and its implications allows students to examine the government's role in protecting citizens.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Thorough Textbook, February 23, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: American Foreign Relation (New Ways to Know) (Paperback)
This book provides a thorough survey of American Foreign Reltaions, great for use as a textbook. Events are covered accurately and in great detail. This is not a great source for any analysis or deep commentary, but serves as a great starting point for any classes in foreign relations. Includes very many illustrations, such as cartoons, maps, and photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Historical View, November 10, 2006

This book brings some of the items one read about in history classes to a more 'back channel' perspective. Monroe Doctrine and the like are the opening situations, and instead of 'we put a blockade on German ship' it goes it to some of the things that happened to stop a war from breaking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great content for Poli Sci classes. Valuable information, March 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was supposed to get the newer edition of the book for class, but the old edition has worked fine for its purpose. I have used this book for essays, my take-home final exam, and as a resource for papers. Overall, its content is great for a variety of Political Science classes, ranging from International Relations to Foreign Policy. The text really shows a timeline of America's place in the world through the decades and through presidential administrations.
