Good children's historical fiction,
This review is from: Wild Bill Hickok and the Rebel Raiders: A Historical Novel (Disney's American Frontier) (Library Binding)
At a younger age, my son loved this tale of James Hickok, the pony express stationmaster of Rock Creek, Nebraska.Based on Hickok's true history, this 74 page novel includes a two page epilogue giving a synopsis of Hickok's life--his 1837 birth, 1856 journey to Kansas, role in the antislavery Free State Army, work as a Sante Fe and Oregon trails stage coach driver and his 1861 assignment to the Nebraska pony express office. The book exposes kids to the introduction of new 19th century technologies like the telegraph wire, and of course the history of the civil War. It's a great adventure with a big dollop of history thrown in. |
