Book Description

A Schiffer Book for Collectors May 2000
This is an important study of the fine handcrafted furniture made in America between 1840-1880. Most pieces are identified by the cabinetmaker who made them and biographies of the leading cabinetmakers from all over America are presented. There are special sections on Wooden desks and John Henry Belter including new, significant information on Belter the man. Most of the examples have not been seen before in any publication. In the book, Mrs. Dubrow explains why this was the most productive period of American furniture making, and she shows actual room settings as well as individual forms.

This book serves as an excellent reference for Victorian furniture and is a great buying aid due to the large number of photographs with captions that identify the maker. Includes profiles of many of the famous makers such as John Henry Belter and J & JW Meeks.

1.0 out of 5 stars American Furniture of the 19th Century 1840 ~ 1880, September 3, 2008
This review is from: American Furniture of the 19th Century: 1840-1880 (A Schiffer Book for Collectors) (Hardcover)
I have purchased this fine Antique Reference Book before, but not this edition and had I realized it had prices I would not have purchased it again. These prices are out dated the minute they are established and hence this book does a dealer of fine Antiques NO favors and a disservice to the collector. If the values are 10 years old, what does that say for today's value. You can't buy gasoline or groceries with an established price of 10 years ago and you can't buy antiques that way either.

Terrible thing they ( the publishers ) did to such a fine reference book.
