CLASSIC SOUNDTRACK,
This review is from: American Gangster (Audio CD)
This is spooky & funky at the same time. The Best soundtrack to come along in years. Hank Shoclkee's stuff is as solid as ever but Marc Streitenfeld's funk on this is thick. It has a somewhat Massive Attack-ish feel to it (which is a HUGE compliment.) So the next time you need to do some creepin' on a come-up, drop this and you got the perfect music for it.

American Gangster Soundtrack II Version,
By
This review is from: American Gangster (Audio CD)
I just downloaded Jay-Z's version and ecstatically listening to it. I didn't realize that there were two soundtrack versions. I loved the music through this movie. As I stated in my review of Jay-Z's version, I wasn't sure what I liked best about this movie, the music, the scenes or the fine acting of the whole crew. Certainly not the depravity of the junkies although, you can't just bury your head and pretend this stuff didn't go on and is still going on. I have to agree with Frank Lucas in this respect, as long as there are people willing to buy the junk, there are always going to be a supplier willing to provide. It's just kind of hard to realize some people were that cold to their fellow human beings. Marc's instrumentals are fabulous. The only thing I mourn is the fact that the glorious choir that was singing acapella when Ritchie was ready to bust Frank Lucas. Again, I'm not much for gospel but they sang the roof off. They should have been mentioned somewhere. It was kind of a sad sweetness to hear them. They were my Mum's favorite hymns. They were played at her funeral but, not sung as good as this choir. Its hard as hell to sing acapella that good. Anthony Hamilton is a pure delight to listen too. I'm glad he's brought back that good old funky blues sound again that was prevalent in my growing up years. I had to listen to it in secret. My Mum and Dad liked both kinds of music Country and Western UGH! Although, classic country has a few artists that I can tolerate fairly well just don't ever play me I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. Give me Issac Hayes belting out the theme from Shaft, Curtis Mayfield, Marvyn Gaye, you get the picture LOL! About damn time this music was put out there.
