5.0 out of 5 stars Sharp, Comfortable, Good Battery Life
When I lost the recharging unit to my B&D grass shear, I was already so dissatisfied that I decided to try the American Gardener 4-inch cordless. It's hard to believe that there can be such a big difference between two products. The American Gardener (AG)sheer is twice as sharp and twice as fast as the B&D. 3.0 out of 5 stars Blade & its housing are a problem
This is quieter and lighter than the Black & Decker and it lasts longer on a single charge, but the blade wears out faster and the housing for the blade can easily be knocked out of kilter rendering it useless. I sent it back to mfg who fixed it but then the battery started going and it stopped working altogether. It worked well for the short time I had it but it became...

It will even cut through mondo grass and other tough stemmed plants. It is great for trimming spring growth from bushes, and even helped shape a tangelo tree and three privets.

The battery life - considering the speed - a remarkable 45-50 minutes and if that isn't tghe kicker, the AG is comfortable, lighter and seemingly more ergonomic than the B&D.

Even though there is no way to lock these shears (or any others) in an "on" position, it still deserves five stars. I'd give it more if I could liock it in an on position. Of course, I'd probably forget to turn it off and then they'd start calling me "Lefty."

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality review......, May 28, 2006
This review is from: American Gardener GS48 4-Inch 4.8-Volt Cordless Grass Shear (Lawn & Patio)
I am a new owner of a Model GS48 four inch grass clipper. This is a superb piece of equipment that makes trimming around my three and one half acre lawn a pleasant piece of cake. It does have a serious design flaw designed into it that should be addressed however.

It was a 60 mile trip for me to buy it then two more trips to fix it. (180 miles) The pivot pin for the blades does not have adequate depth to secure the retaining pin in place securely. While I was on my maiden voyage, I stalled it accidently on a twig and it stopped cutting grass. I went to the manual and found that a list of materials does not exist in it. I finally opened it up and found the retaining ring stuck in the grease. At the time I guessed that a pivot pin was missing. I took a strong magnet and retraced my tracks. I finally found the pin and reassembled it. It worked fine again until I hit another stick and the unit failed again. This time the retaining pin was lost and I had to do the magnet thing again. Replacing the retaining ring conept did not solve the problem and I decided to purchase a beefier ring. This time I inserted the pivot pin from the inside out with thought in mind that if it came apart again, at least the pivot pin would not be lost. So far I have some stick hits but the assembly stayed together.

This design flaw is a serious quality problem and should have never happened. A simple short meeting with with the staff would have revealed the problem and the solution would have been an easy fix.

I am surprised that there is no way that a customer can contact the people who are responsible for this problem. Dealing with a service group is no insurance that the top officer of the company will receive this information. This problem is a combination Engineering, Purchasing and Quality responsibility.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best shears I've found, December 29, 2006

I've tried a lot of brands of shears over the years and these are the best I've found so far. They are powerful enough to tackle even coarse grass around the farm and keep their charge for a good 40-45 minutes. I even use them to clean up perennial beds in fall and spring.

The Black & Decker is really not any better. These companies need to build a better grass shear!

The battery out lasts the blade.

I used the shears about 8-10 times (40 minutes each time) when blade became dull and no longer usable on simple grass. I have tried to sharpen with little success.

I bought the American Gardener cordless grass shears after doing some research and reading other people's reviews and comments on this site and others. I needed grass shears to cut around a new fence we put up in the back yard as I didn't want to use the weed whacker and damage the fence. I've had the shears for about a month now and have used them 5 or 6 times. They work great! No problems cutting through grass and some more stubborn weeds, easy to hold/operate, and the battery life is about 45 minutes of constant usage. My only complaint is that the size of my yard makes it hard to cut everything in one charge, so I tend to split up the work so I can recharge in between. I like the shears to much, though, that I just plan on buying a second set and will keep both units charged so I can do all the work in one day.

No complaints so far. Solid unit/construction. Did not buy the separate wheeled attachment to cut while standing up as the reviews made it sound like junk.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Opinion of the American Gardener Cordless Grass Shears, July 13, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: American Gardener GS48 4-Inch 4.8-Volt Cordless Grass Shear (Lawn & Patio)
I purchased a pair of these shears last month after my Black & Decker ones wouldn't charge so I could use them for the season. I first thought I could do without something like this, but found that wasn't true. I chose these instead of another Black and Decker, because I liked the idea of a wider cut and more power. So far, I have been well pleased with the performance of these shears, and the ease with which they handle going around and up close to things where even a weed eater won't go. This is actually my 3rd pair of those type shears, so I'm really sold on them being a necessity in the yard especially if you have such areas where a weed eater type won't go and do a neat job. These shears do that, and as mentioned, so far, I am very well pleased with their performance.

Once charged the unit performed very well and blew my Black and Decker unit out of the water. I did 2 lawns before noticing a slight power decrease. My first impression is it's a great device but will reserve my overall opinion as I use the unit over a period of time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its description, October 8, 2006

This cordless grass shear makes it easy to trim around flowers and shrubbery, as well as walls and borders. It does hold its charge without losing cutting power for at least the 30 minute stretches that I have used it. Do be careful to clear away stones and small, fallen tree limbs to avoid the blades coming into contact with them, which could bend them.

I like the ease and convenience not dragging out a power cord, and cleanup is a breeze.
