4.0 out of 5 stars Good for very small jobs.
Don't try to use this as a hedge trimmer! However, it's perfectly suited for trimming rose bushes and small hedges in a garden. Much better price than similar competing products from major home improvement stores.

1.0 out of 5 stars Broken on a branch
The second time I used this item, trimming grass around a bush, one of the plastic gears (inaccessibly) inside the gearbox snapped off when I caught the clippers on a branch. It's irreparable now. It would seem the only use for this thing is to trim in places where there's too much obstruction to use the mower, but I guess it's too delicate. It had caught on branches...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gift and a workhorse for around the home, June 11, 2006
This review is from: American Gardener SHR6 6-Inch Shrub Clipper with Extra 4-Inch Grass Shear Blade (Lawn & Patio)
This unit is good within its limits: it's a small hedge clipper, meaning the blade is not long enough to do a big, sculpted privet hedge, but it is long enough to do shrubs around the house and small hedges. The addition of the grass blade means you can do around the mailbox post, or those places under the fence.

For big jobs, you'd need a long hedge clipper and for much grass, a cord trimmer. But this is probably what you'll grab to do most jobs around the lawn. It makes a good wedding or housewarming present.

It would seem the only use for this thing is to trim in places where there's too much obstruction to use the mower, but I guess it's too delicate. It had caught on branches before, and, sensibly, jammed, so I could back off and start again, but I guess you only get a dozen or so "incidents" before it gives up for good. A complete waste of money.

3.0 out of 5 stars handy but not safe, September 22, 2006
This review is from: American Gardener SHR6 6-Inch Shrub Clipper with Extra 4-Inch Grass Shear Blade (Lawn & Patio)
I like this tool for light trimming, and it certainly holds a charge well, but it's not a particularly safe tool. The "on" often sticks, and there's no guard to keep it from engaging accidentally -- which is just what I managed to do, and ended up with a pretty nasty cut. Consider it a good tool for the price but use caution.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shrub Clippers, August 3, 2006
This review is from: American Gardener SHR6 6-Inch Shrub Clipper with Extra 4-Inch Grass Shear Blade (Lawn & Patio)
These clippers are great for trimming shrubs. My son was able to trim about three medium sized shrubs before the battery needed to be recharged. It is lightweight and easy to get into tight places. The rechargeable battery is great.

I have only used once, but it works great. It doesn't have the power to cut through any big stuff but works great on the small stuff. I highly recomend.

I've got 25 or so small-medium shrubs and rose bushes, and this tool works perfectly for them. One charge will get me through all 25 of them (some need lots of trimming, some only a little).

Note: this will not cut branches as thick as a pencil. You'll want a different tool for that. Some of my shrubs have some branches that thick, but I just use a hand cutter for those few branches.

3.0 out of 5 stars a great product until it breaks, June 16, 2006

Like other reviewers I find this a wonderful product for all around use and am actually buying a second one from Amazon.

This second purhase is due however to the fact that my first machine worked for a few weeks and then had what customer service called "drive problems." After being returned for repair, it never worked as powerfully as on initial use and recently stopped running altogether. I probably used it 20 times total and feel that it was not worth the full purchase price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cordless Trimmer/Clipper, January 14, 2008

This product works well for quick touch-ups on shrubs and bushes. The shrub attachment cuts small swaths (6 inch) and therefore is not recommended by me for large shrubs and bushes. I use my large gas powered trimmer for that (but that weighs a ton and is hard on your arms and shoulders), so for the occasional quick trim I use the cordless. The grass attachment works well around large plants that are not capable of withstanding a hit by my string trimmer, such as lilies and gladiolas. It works well in these situations but requires you to get on all fours to use it. The only other drawback is the run time, which is about 20-30 mins on a full charge, but that is fine with me since I only use it sparingly. The two cutter heads are easy to change as well.

I use this item on a 2 acre yard around the trees, fence, pool, and play equipment. Customer service from the manufactures was wonderful when I blew the motor and for 15 I was able to get a new motor and it still works wonderful.
