My 5-year old daughter is fairly persnickety about what I read to her. We've tried other chapter books, including Disney's Fairy Series, Alice in Wonderland, L. Frank Baum's "OZ" books, and Peter Pan. This is the first that she's really connected with.Kit is a strong role model for girls, modeling intelligence, hard work, and kindness in a way that doesn't seem fake or contrived. I admit that I bought the books just to better illustrate the movie, but I'm sold. I intend on buying more of the American Girl series to share with my little girl.

I think the book series is wonderful, and was pleased to get it before Christmas. I was disappointed that the selling description didn't say it was only the first three in the set. All the sets I have previously purchased were the complete set of six books. I was lucky in the fact that my niece is appreciative with whatever she gets for Christmas. More detail would have been great.Thank

Kit is a great "American girl", and the stories are fantastic. My children (pre- school) love her, they want to hear her stories again and again. And at the end of every book, children learn something about America as it was at the time the storie plays.

Great set of books for young girls and young at heart. Kit Kittredge is believable and this series teaches kids about the Great Depression without making it too depressing or sugar-coating it in any way. An excellent series!

I just bought this set for a neighbors daughter and she hasn't been able to put them down. She is on book six and looking forward to the new movie coming out. It is a beautiful compilation of stories that go to the heart of any young girl. Ann Clarke, author of People Are So Different! based on tolerance and understanding.

Excellent set of books. Very nice stories that give readers an excellent idea of how life was like in the Depression. I enjoy reading these books with my daughter.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Kit an American Girl (6 Book Set) (Paperback)
These books are about a young girl that is struggling in the depression. Her dad is gone to Chicago to find a job because he has lost his job. Their family has boarders living with them so they can earn extra money. They are still struggling. Kit has a best friend Ruthie. Ruthie is different than Kit because she likes fairies and princesses. Kit likes to type on the typewriter and make newspapers for her family and the boarders. She also helps her mom with a million chores every day. Now that Kit's family has boarders there is more work for everyone, but Kit still goes on some fun adventures with her best friends. These books are fantastic. They are fun to read. It feels like you are going on the adventures with them. My mom says that she also likes that they teach children about the depression. They should make more Kit books! I think everyone should at least read one of them. I'll guarantee you will just love them. Kit rocks so much!

My daughter read them all in a few days, and insisted that I read them as well. Then we had a book club afterwards to talk about them and explore any connections that we had made between the Depression (the time period of which Kit was set) and our current living situation. It was amazing! All of the American Girl books are beautifully written and illustrated, plus the back of each book gives fuller details on the time period and why certain things occurred. They are quality books. Both of us are learning a great deal about American history through these books. We highly recommend them to anyone who would like to understand American history through the eyes of young female characters.
