This game has five essential events made famous by the classic television show, and this is your chance to bring them to life in your own living room! Knock your opponents off the platform in Joust. If you're successful, you'll hear them scream frantically as they fall! Climb the Wall before a gladiator manages to pull you off! Swing to kill in Human Canonball, but don't get thrown around yourself! Powerball requires quick feet. Don't drop the ball! Dodge projectiles in Assault and shoot your foe before you get shot yourself! Do well enough, and you may just get to the Eliminator. Caution: The Emliminator is incredibly brutal! 3.0 out of 5 stars Not Too Bad, Would Have Been Higher Rating If Not for the First Phase of the Elminator., November 18, 2010

John Doe (Somewhere in New Jersey) - See all my reviews
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: American Gladiators (Video Game)
Growing up watching the original American Gladiators, I easily picked up this game due to my fondness of that show. What I did not realize that is it is a pretty hard game. After doing level one over and over, I got the hang of the game. I immediately like the challenge of the Wall, which became my favorite event of the five. The worst of any is Powerball because of the horrible controls. Whenever I get the ball or go behind the trough, I keep getting stuck there for no reason. Running back and forth, it's just crazy. Eventually, I've always not played this one and just run the time out because it's impossible to lose in this one. I could care less about gaining a life in this event because it's just not worth the headache. Elsewhere, most players have the biggest misconception about Joust stage as they smash the buttons endlessly yet lose. What they did not realize is that you have to counterattack each movement the opponent makes. That means if he does high hit, you go low; if he goes middle, you go high. If he goes low, you go middle. If you observe the set pattern that the foe makes and it's very repetitious, just copy the patterns down and then do the conversion for yourself and stick with it over and over. For example, if he goes high low high middle repeatedly, you do low middle low high over and over. That's all there is to know. Be sure to grab that stick after the 3rd gladiator win; one hit of the opponent with that saves you a lot of time and tiredness in the hand. The cannonball isn't hard at all; every part requires memorization in terms of when to jump, when to let it go, and how long to wait for. Next event which is the assault can be viewed easy or hard depending on one's method of tackling it. My opinion is to aim for the finish line and forget about shooting missiles at it. That's for every level of the game. I thought the missiles were a nuisance to me and a time-waster. Just keep moving and aim for the finish line without wasting any second. Finally, we come to the Wall. Everybody hates the Wall, and everybody thinks it's the most difficult event ever. However, misconception quickly takes over here. First of all, learn how to climb the wall. Learn what happens when you do Up + A, Up + B, Up/Right + A, etc. You will be surprised at the various movements of the climber. Second of all, the wall is about positioning; make sure you position well to make the gladiator to fall down. Often, it's very easy. Third of all, do not hold the controller in the traditional way with the right hand. Instead, what you should do is hover your right hand over the buttons and run the index and second fingers rhythmically. You can't just smash the buttons simultaneously; that's not how the Wall is done. This is about rhythm. I want to talk about the Wall of Level 3 and 4. The former has particular gap opening that shows the width of two bricks. You may think this is impossible to achieve. However, if you paid attention to what I am saying about learning how to climb via controls, doing Up/Right + A and then Left + A over and over will do the trick; even you can alternatively do the Up/Left + B and then Right + B (I prefer the other one over this one) over and over. It will do the job for you. Eventually, you get better at it. Before you do that, make sure that the climber is in a tight position with no brick in between. Then climb up doing the controls I mentioned. In fact, you don't have to do all of the climbing over there to do that; why not just practice that right at the start to get a feel of what I am talking about before you get over there? Now, Level 4, there is a very tricky part where there is a lot of gaps in the bricks all over the place. I thought it was tough at first, but after much of practice, I understood all about it. I can even do it in my sleep if I wanted to. The key is learning how to climb and understanding what each control movement will do for the climber. It's all about proper placement and correct controlling of the buttons to transverse through the bricks. In fact, there isn't a youtube video of this level 4 wall, so I will do that one day and upload a video I'll make to illustrate what I did. Keeping in reminder, and most players do not realize, do not worry about the timer at all. When it reaches 00, it doesn't mean the game is over; in fact, the timer has no bearing whatsoever. So, take your time on the walls. Now, I have beaten all of the four levels without a problem, and they take practice and some using to. Finally, we come to the Eliminator. Before that one, I was ready to give the game a rating of 5 out of 5, probably maybe just 4. But the Eliminator quickly changed my mind. First of all, the Eliminator is the worst of any due to two reasons: no password and the first phase. Every level has a password which makes it all convenient. However, if you die in the Eliminator and there is no password to get back to it again for obviously more practice, you have to redo level four all over again which is a major frustration and mind numbing. I know that I can beat level four, but really, I don't feel like it. I just want to work on the Eliminator. The game genie is somewhat of a help; its only limitation was that it will give you 20 lives instead of infinite lives. It's a tremendous idea to use it, so the phases of the Eliminator can be mastered. The other negative part of the game is the first phase of the Eliminator. That was really my worst nightmare: the dreadful controls especially the jumping part while being sick of the orange bouncing balls. I died in that phase so many times and feeling icky each time I am in there right from the start. I really, really hated it. Once I finally got past to it, the Eliminator actually got better and more tolerable. The hang bike is a lot of fun to maneuver and is pretty easy. Then another fun part comes which is running on the conveyor belts and jumping over. Not bad at all. Then another hang bike which is fun too. Finally, we come to the glider. I must say, it's somewhat hard, but I got used to the idea of it. I'll give you my tips on how to handle it. First glider, just jump over a bit after the white blocks below you. Then the second glide, just jump off exactly right before the end of the white blocks. I think this will happen two (maybe three) more times. Then, the rest of the gliders will happen probably about two white blocks before to jump off. I liked the ending, it's actually satisfying I must say. After I've beaten the game thoroughly, I refuse to play it again. It's just not worth it anymore. All in all, American Gladiators is a difficult game but is not too intolerably difficult except for the first phase of the Eliminator which is mostly due to absolutely crappy controls; however, it was a mix of fun and mundane. A good game overall. i just have an idea about the Wall. How about two Power Gloves and doing it? That would be awesome, huh????

This review is from: American Gladiators (Video Game)
It's like the game show American Gladiators, which was fun to watch. Although, I like the game and it was kind of fun. Sometimes, I wish that they put this on Nintendo Gamecube just for the memories.
