Biography

It is fitting that ten seconds into Blitzen Trapper’s fifth full-length record, front man Eric Earley utters that most sacred of rock ‘n’ roll tropes: “For to love is to leave or to run like a rollin’ stone,” he sings in the harmonized verse that leads off the album’s epic title track, “Destroyer of the Void.” As is the case with just about ... Editorial Reviews

On American Goldwing, Blitzen Trapper's 6th album and third on Sub Pop, the band let their loves and influences hard guitar rock, country picking and pawn-shop Casio aplomb hang out for all to see. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Eric Earley says American Goldwing will make you want to shotgun a beer in the shower while listening to the Stones or Joe Walsh (well, or Blitzen Trapper) and we are not inclined to argue.

Customer Reviews

On the more important musical side, this is my favorite Blitzen Trapper album, as a whole, to date. Hugh B. Crank  |  2 reviewers made a similar statement
Good to listen too while driving down the road. Timothy J May  |  1 reviewer made a similar statement
The title track of this album just might be the best song of 2011 by the way. WorthlessKnowledgeEncyclopedia  |  2 reviewers made a similar statement

5.0 out of 5 stars Just another point of view.... September 13, 2011
By B. Deal
Format:MP3 Music
I would actually rate this album at 4 stars but I wanted to counter some of the negativity. Here's the thing, if you are expecting an album to redefine music, if you insist that every new album released must blow your mind with something "innovative" or "progressive" this probably isn't your album. On the other hand, if you are a person who trys to find the good in an album, if you like driving down a road going nowhere just so you can roll the windows down, turn up the volume and leave the rest of the whining complaining world behind, this album should help put a smile on your face.

5.0 out of 5 stars REASONS TO BUY THIS ALBUM September 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Dear Music Appreciator,

Here are some reasons to buy this new album by Blitzen Trapper:

- You are laid back enough to appreciate good rockin' music for what it is rather than pick it apart and critically compare it to a bunch of other music and/ or bands and/or genres that you think are somehow relative to the quality of Blitzen Trapper as a band and American Goldwing as a record.

- You are sensible enough to know that for a band to not fit neatly into a box could actually be a good thing.

- You are wise enough to know that a band's failure to fit into a box or to capitalize on a signature sound could actually be what makes it great and that sometimes the lack of a certain defining quality in a band is a defining quality in and of itself and that that could actually be close to what Dylan had in mind when he called himself a "musical expeditionary." Blitzen Trapper is a band of musical expeditionaries.

- You are educated enough to know that, as in the movies, if a band produces a record that seems to play by a certain set of rules associated with a certain genre that the record can still be a work of art if the band plays by those rules well. The Hollywood studio system produced paint-by-the-numbers genre films for years that were later recognized as true works of art and masterpieces of their particular genre. Is AMERICAN GOLDWING a true work of art or a masterpiece of it's genre? Too soon to tell but I definitely can't say that it's not...

- You are cool enough to know that when a band reminds you of Zeppelin and Dylan and The Band and Big Star on the same record that it's not a troublesome thing - it's an effing awesome thing.

- I saw these guys live at Easy Street Records in Seattle, WA last Tuesday for this record's release day and they rocked the store and I couldn't help but lay down my $9.99 for a copy of AMERICAN GOLDWING. The CD came with a free poster and a keychain - c'mon free stuff is awesome (FURR came with a patch if I remember right). The album has been playing in my car every day this week and I am not tired of it.

- There is a beautiful, sepia toned, panoramic photograph of the band waiting for you when you open the gatefold digipack that houses this remarkable record - stare at it while you listen to "Fletcher" or "Love the Way You Walk Away" and whether you lived through the decade or not, just let yourself groove on the band's tangible 1970's vibe - music that now seems to come from a time when humanity was just a little more laid back.

Sincerely,

Constant Listener

4.0 out of 5 stars Suffering from a Particular Complex? Nope. September 13, 2011
Format:MP3 Music
I wanted to post something to counter the only other review (as of 9/13) that bashes Blitzen Trapper (and "Goldwing") for "suffering from a complex" that involves neither a signature sound nor a an emotional appeal. I'm not sure how anyone could make that statement after listening to "Furr," and while Goldwing isn't Furr (in my personal top 10 from '08), I think it's a better (funner?) album than "Destroyer Of The Void." Goldwing brings back the energy and drive that make Blitzen Trapper such a joy to hear. Maybe some Pitchfork-types want to bash Goldwing, but I don't think you can listen to Goldwing from front to back without wanting to do some air guitar or ride around town with the windows down. It's a shame this album wasn't out three months ago, as it is nearly a perfect summer record. Don't put it on your couch and try to diagnose it with a complex. Instead, buy and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great
A fantastic album and actually one of my favorite albums of 2011. It's not as good as the Decemberists or Black Keys, but fits in nicely behind them.

just OK, not as good as the last 3 albums, although I will give it some more time. Lacks the pop of furr, wish there was more electric guitar
