2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, March 21, 2006
By Rebekah Scheiman (Flint, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: American Government CLEP Test Study Guide
I paid almost $40 for this and received an emailed PDF file. It is only 39 pages long; 25 pages have information on American Government. As such, it does not cover the subject comprehensively enough to pass the CLEP and would probably only be useful as a review after reading and understanding a regular textbook. It looks more like a student's organized study notes than something that was written by an expert on the subject. If you do buy it, don't depend on it alone.

One plus to this book is a 50-question practice test. The questions aren't phrased much like the actual questions on the test, but another practice test is always good.

American Government is a harder-than-average CLEP (Most people score 5-15 points below their usual score with the same amount and intensity of preparation). The main difficulty lies primarily in the wording of the questions and answer choices, not necessarily the difficulty of the subject matter itself. They won't just ask a straightforward question with a straightforward answer. You have to be able to pull from your knowledge of several different facts in order to answer one question, which is why you need a much more comprehensive book to study.

I studied the Cliff Notes American Government book and Microsoft Encarta for 2 weeks and got a 68. I recommend the Cliff Notes over this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed...., February 2, 2006
This review is from: American Government CLEP Test Study Guide
I purchased this study guide to help prepare me for the American Government Clep Exam. Though the guide was fairly thorough in covering the topics that it outlined, I believe that it failed to cover the brunt of material found in the exam.

I was disappointed to find out that even though the guide touched on most of the topics in the exam, it failed to cover the material in-depth enough to properly prepare someone to answer most of the questions.

With that being said, I did pass the Clep Exam, but I only passed with a 58 (a score of 50 is passing, 80 is perfect). If the exam had not been packed with almost 20 questions about graph and chart interpretations, which had little to do with politics, I am sure I would have failed. Thank God for the easy questions.

Anyhow, I would recommend that anyone searching for a comprehensive American Government Clep study guide search elsewhere. Good luck with your tests, and I hope you find a better study aid than I did.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too Basic, May 11, 2006
By Knowledge Seeker (Vista, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Government CLEP Test Study Guide
I bought this book hoping it would be the only thing I would need to pass the test. Well I was way wrong. There is no way that I would of been able to pass the test just by using this study guide alone. Overall this purchase for me was a complete waste of money. If you want to get good info to help you pass the CLEP exam I strongly reccomend that you look somewhere else. Don't waste your money on this junk.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pretty much worthless
This "book", which is really only a couple dozen pages, was written by a University of Phoenix employee and quickly runs through the core of US Government. Read more
