5.0 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to it!, July 8, 2003

This review is from: American Gypsy (Audio CD)
I won this CD in a door prize raffle for the local Blues Society. I had never heard of Tony Furtado before. I picked it mainly because the album title sounded like it could be interesting. I'm not much for Bluegrass, so it's not surprising that I'd never heard of Tony. My musical tastes are pretty vaired otherwise - all kinds of blues, jazz, rock, a sprinkling of folk, with a specific primary interest in the music of Frank Zappa. Well I tell ya, I have totally flipped over this CD! In the past week that I've had it I have probably played it 25 times. I can't take it out of my CD player except to transfer it from my CD player at work to the CD player in my car to the CD player at home (you get the picture). I just love this CD, the nice variety of musical style. Sometimes it's sort of bluesy, with a little cajun voodoo/swamp boogie kind of sound. He plays a medley of celtic tunes in the middle of the CD. Sometimes it's kind of jazzy, sometimes slow and (very) beautiful. I'm telling everybody I know about this CD (and writing my first ever Amazon.com CD review to boot!). If you like a variety of musical styles, by all means get this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Get'm Tony, October 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: American Gypsy (Audio CD)
Being a past friend of Mr. Furtado, I didn't feel it appropriate to rate the new American Gypsy, knowing I might be too partial to the likness of the man. Then I reconsidered and felt, who better than someone close to recognize and apreciate the growth.
The CD was delivered to my desk, with a smile I began to jam with Oh Berta (you can't help yourself). It was later I realized that I was having a very hard time holding on to this CD. It was constantly being borrowed. My mom held it hostage in her car for over a week.
The musical range is so uplifting. Tony's growth in his own voice,(he used to never sing). It's not like a trained vocal styling, It's his voice. So natural and believable.
Old time tunes mixed with you name it. All a celebration of where we have been. Sunday revivals, riverboats, dirty street jazz. His bottle neck and banjo alive and real, I mean real. We all know his talent is off the board, now with this CD he brings it back on. With that, is true unadulterated growth.
With the purchase of this CD I highly recommend finding some string to tye it to your stereo.
