5.0 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to it!
I won this CD in a door prize raffle for the local Blues Society. I had never heard of Tony Furtado before. I picked it mainly because the album title sounded like it could be interesting. I won this CD in a door prize raffle for the local Blues Society. I had never heard of Tony Furtado before. I picked it mainly because the album title sounded like it could be interesting. I'm not much for Bluegrass, so it's not surprising that I'd never heard of Tony. My musical tastes are pretty vaired otherwise - all kinds of blues, jazz, rock, a sprinkling of folk, with a specific primary interest in the music of Frank Zappa. Well I tell ya, I have totally flipped over this CD! In the past week that I've had it I have probably played it 25 times. I can't take it out of my CD player except to transfer it from my CD player at work to the CD player in my car to the CD player at home (you get the picture). I just love this CD, the nice variety of musical style. Sometimes it's sort of bluesy, with a little cajun voodoo/swamp boogie kind of sound. He plays a medley of celtic tunes in the middle of the CD. Sometimes it's kind of jazzy, sometimes slow and (very) beautiful. I'm telling everybody I know about this CD (and writing my first ever Amazon.com CD review to boot!). If you like a variety of musical styles, by all means get this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Go Get'm Tony, October 14, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: American Gypsy (Audio CD)
Being a past friend of Mr. Furtado, I didn't feel it appropriate to rate the new American Gypsy, knowing I might be too partial to the likness of the man. Then I reconsidered and felt, who better than someone close to recognize and apreciate the growth.
The CD was delivered to my desk, with a smile I began to jam with Oh Berta (you can't help yourself). It was later I realized that I was having a very hard time holding on to this CD. It was constantly being borrowed. My mom held it hostage in her car for over a week.
The musical range is so uplifting. Tony's growth in his own voice,(he used to never sing). It's not like a trained vocal styling, It's his voice. So natural and believable.
Old time tunes mixed with you name it. All a celebration of where we have been. Sunday revivals, riverboats, dirty street jazz. His bottle neck and banjo alive and real, I mean real. We all know his talent is off the board, now with this CD he brings it back on. With that, is true unadulterated growth.
With the purchase of this CD I highly recommend finding some string to tye it to your stereo.

While visiting friends in Albq NM this past fall, I heard this CD for the first time. I was totally taken by it, and now listen to it all of the time. What a great sound Mr. Furtado has. I recommend to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Tony Furtado yet, December 18, 2002

This is Tony Furtado's best album. Hartford (for departed John) and his cover of Some of Shelly's Blues are very moving, and the rest of the album does not disappoint. I wish Tony would have sang on more of his albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is how a guitar SHOULD sound!, December 27, 2006
This review is from: American Gypsy (Audio CD)
I was lucky enough to see Tony "live" and buy this disc from him while he was on break along with another disc we talked about. On the second break, I bought his other two he had with him. That night here in Helena, MT, I witnessed an unbelieveable performance. Mr. Furtado proceeded to fill the dance floor before he was into the third bar of the first song. When you can do that while playing original music, you truly have something special as far as talent goes.

That night, Tony let a little lightning out of the bottle, and for my money, American Gypsy captures that spirit perfectly. I also have two of his "live" albums and they are very, very good indeed. If you understand anything about playing a guitar, when you hear Tony Furtado play, you will think there's some truth to magic.

I'm now up to seven of his discs total - not a bad one in the bunch.

American Gypsy is yet another page in the ever expanding book of music that is Tony Furtado. I got this CD without hearing any of the cuts beforehand, only drawing from the knowledge of some of his other works, and have enjoyed every cut. I highly recommend this CD.

Several reviewers gave this artist and album rave reviews, stating that he was talented and an expert in several genres. I can only wonder how old they are. Clearly they have never heard the Kaleidoscope Side Kicks album. There is a group which can make the top performers in various music genres envious. It doesnt mean there arent some good cuts, "Oh Berta Berta" by itself alone is worth the price of the album and then some. It just means that if you've never heard better, then you quite possibly dont know better.
