5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required listening before starting a band
No, not EVERYONE'S favorite tracks are represented here but this is a VERY GOOD brief overview of the genre. It's a place to start if you're not familiar with Hardcore and may cause 90% of your current record collection to become obsolete (at least until you're old enough to realize that liking only ONE kind of music is kind of silly).

This record should be...

3.0 out of 5 stars Who picked these songs?
It's nice that they have Bad Brains, Minor Threat, 7 Seconds, Black Flag, but where are the Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Descendents? Hell, the Misfits had a whole chapter in the book, but can't get one song on the soundtrack? I recommend checking various Bit Torrent sites before dropping $$ on this thing.

This record should be copied a million times and handed out to the poor kids who go to Good Charlotte concerts thinking they're "punk". Today's youth aren't brainless! They just have a hard time finding the real stuff!

P.S. (No Kennedys or Misfits due to the ongoing legal entanglements between all the former members. Same deal as the movie.)

I saw a concert in LA w/Fear, Circle Jerks, and Black Flag. Wow this really brought it all back. If you like punk or want to get in touch with the punk movement of the 80s in the US this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars history in the making, January 17, 2007
This review is from: American Hardcore: History of American Punk Rock (Audio CD)
I really like this soundtrack because it's rare to find so many of the trailblazing hardcore bands of the early '80s all in one place. Some of these tracks were previously very rare, at least on CD. In particular, the Middle Class' "Out of Vogue" alone, to me, is worth the price of admission. It's barely a minute long but it has the distinction of being (arguably) the first ever hardcore single. And of course, alongside some of the more obscure bands, the "big three" of first wave hardcore (Black Flag, Minor Threat, and Bad Brains) are represented here. If you haven't heard these bands yet, you owe it to yourself to check this out. All in all, this CD a great introduction to what hardcore is all about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Hardcore Comp., September 19, 2007

My guess is that Glenn Danzig didn't grant them permission to use his songs on the compilation. Could be the same with Jello and DK. Lord knows if they presented every great tune from that era it would be a box set. Good songs on this one none-the-less.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cliff Notes, But A Lot Missing, May 11, 2007
This review is from: American Hardcore: History of American Punk Rock (Audio CD)
Excellent CD & DVD, but it was far too brief to really encapsulate what hard core was really all about. How can a CD like this be put out without the Dead Kennedy's? I'm sure it's not the filmmakers fault, but why bother? A really good starting point for people who vaguely remember the hard core movement or want to understand it better. I just hope the little tweeners of today avoid it altogether and don't try to adopt (read: bastardize) it as something of thier own.
