An American Haunting,
By S Simon (Weatherford, Texas United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An American Haunting (Hardcover)
I love a good ghost story, and Scott Johnson delivers! This was a page turner, very creepy.
A Texas family moves into a "fixer-upper" and finds out there is more that needs fixing than just dry rot. The characters came alive and so did the ghosts but I have to warn you--do not read this before bed.

An American Haunting is a great ghost story about a house in Central Texas. The author creates the warmth and closeness with the family while maintaining the scene of evil which is needed in every good spook fest. The "shower" scene...gave me shivers! I would recommend it to anyone who likes a creepy story with a great ending! Buy it, Read it and Love it!

Great ghost story,
By ValFreya "Brandy E" (Texas!!!!) - See all my reviews
This review is from: An American Haunting (Hardcover)
This debut novel is a scary little book. Scott A. Johnson weaves a very realistic tale of a family caught up in something bigger than themselves. He mines the insecurities of keeping a family together through hard times to form the framework of this story. This novel has great pacing, which makes it a great summer read. I finished this in an evening. Since it is such a tight book you don't get the page after page of exposition, which can get tedious in ghost stories. Pick this one up for a night of goosebumps... especially the shower scene <shivers>

Granted not the scariest of books, it does have it's place as being creepy. the fact that it was based on actual events made it all the more interesting. Having lived in San Marcos much of the scenery came alive for me, places and areas were familiar. As for the movie with the same name...book came out first, and yes neither have anything to do with each other, hardly the writers fault.

I did enjoy this book. However, I think that it would have been better if written in the first person. Written in third party, it seems a little too fictional - difficult to believe that it is a true story. If you want an entertaining read - go ahead and try it. If you're looking for a frighteningly real, true story- you might want to look elsewhere.

An American Haunting Is An American Fraud,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: An American Haunting (Hardcover)
I just finished this book and the following is the essence of an e-mail I sent to the publisher:
Without a doubt "An American Haunting" is the most poorly written book I have ever read. It is also a fraud when described as a novel. The book is full of blank pages and half pages. It is indeed, and blessedly I might add, a very short story. The only book I have ever seen with this much white space is a blank journal. As for Scott A. Johnson, I hope he doesn't have his heart set on a career as an author. He stinks. My only question is what does this book have to do with the movie by the same name or with the Bell Witch? I have seen reviews that connect it with both. I bought this book from Amazon.com at a considerable discount and I still want my money back. I usually donate my books to my local library, but I'm embarrassed to let anyone know I read this piece of trash. I would never buy another book published by Harbor House. Amazon forces a star rating for it's reviews, but this book deserves none. |
