5.0 out of 5 stars beaware of the FAKE products offered by DBROTH
This seller DBROTH offers FAKE high performance metal detectors. Do not buy from them. No battery came with the metal detector. Metal detector did not work, either beeping constantly or no beep at all. No customer service from DBROTH either. I have to file a to z claim to get my money back. The fake one appears to be exactly the same as my old one from American Hask, but...

I ordered two different metal detectors at the same time hoping that at least one of them would be good. Somehow, I recieved the same exact metal detector from two different sellers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice starter digital metal detector, June 2, 2009

For the money the Falcon GC1020 is a best buy, low priced, "digital" metal detector. I won't go into all the various features but will tell you I did a lot of research. No... it's not a Fisher, Tesoro or Whites... but, hell it's not bad either and sells for hundreds less than the above named units with a digital readout. It does a good job at finding coins up to 6" down, and the discriminating works well. Construction is solid. I got mine as a package with a set of headphones and a carry bag for under $100.!
If you want a good, low cost detector with a digital readout to start out with, than this is the one. It just may give you the treasure hunting bug!

5.0 out of 5 stars A updated version of Explorer, August 20, 2007
This review is from: American Hawks Explorer II Metal Detector LCD Display Type of Object and Depth (Misc.)
A new updated version of Explorer is out with a faster processor, more user friendly menus, new audio tone settings and a bunch more. Oh, and it looks like they tried to solve the weight issue with a lighter coil. Just in time for our club event!

5.0 out of 5 stars good performance, April 18, 2008

Like all metal detectors, there is a learning curve to get the most from this unit. Follow the detailed instruction on the manual, you will get most coins and jewelery (you will miss some gold). If you need to find property boundary markers, set it on "All Metal". If you want to detect on the beach, hit the "Disc" button and turn the "Sensitivity" down (less sensitive). Coils are waterproof, rinse after each days use.

My wife and I have taken these out about six times and the only time that we have managed to find the source of the beep was when we were joined by a friend who had a cheap kids metal detector that he paid $20.00 for. Most metal detectors have a constant tone that changes when it detects metal. This thing just beeps once, then after five minutes of trying to re-find the spot where it beeped I might be able to start the long digging process. If my friend brings his detector over we usually find the source of the beep. If not, no luck. I recently took them to the beach thinking that surely I would be able to locate the object in sand and that was when the true extent of these detector's worthlessness. Four different times I found an area where the beep went off and it kept telling me that the object was 5 inches down. Four times I dug down about two feet and stuck the detector all the way down only to be told that the object was still 5 inches down.

Bottom line: if you are new to metal detecting, buy a cheap kids detector. If you want to do some serious detecting opt for a trusted brand. They are expensive, but they pay for themselves if you take them out often enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars try all metal mode, June 7, 2008
This review is from: American Hawks Explorer II Metal Detector LCD Display Type of Object and Depth (Misc.)
As a high end but low cost metal detector I give this thing five stars. My daughter gave me this as birthday present several weeks ago and I enjoyed using it since then. It is very ease of use, and it DOES find what you are searching for (rings, coins, etc). I wanted to make one point:

Of course, this detector has the discrimination function which tells the difference between the various metals. It certainly helps you to avoid digging junk like pull tabs which are everywhere. It does work pretty good. To me, I suggest using "All Metal" mode. I found good stuff under this mode but couldn't under "Discriminatation" mode. I am pretty new to treasure hunting, so it is just suggestion based on my experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT buy this., July 29, 2010

I just got into metal detecting and coin hunting and figured I would invest in a detector, the specs sounded appealing so I bought this and soon as I opened the box I was disapointed. the box has no "American Hawks" on it just a poorly printed "Digital metal detector" with "jewelry" spelled as "jewelry". Beyond the sketchy box, I opened it to find a decent bag, bent earphones that were incredibly uncomfortable and the detector. the construction of it is ok at best, the metal pole would bend/break fairly easily, I put some batteries in it and gave it a test by throwing some coins in the grass, it detected them but with poor accuracy. The depth feature wasn't accurate at all and is basically useless, based on it saying the change was five inches deep when it really was about 1cm away.

Overall, I would avoid this detector. for the same money you can find a nice Bounty hunter detector or similar.

1.0 out of 5 stars DBROTH ruined amazon reputation, September 8, 2008
This review is from: American Hawks Explorer II Metal Detector LCD Display Type of Object and Depth (Misc.)
Do not buy from DBROTH.

My brother bought the American Hawks high performance metal detector last year. I wanted to buy one for myself. I couldn't find the original seller which my brother gave me. When I did search in amazon, this product came up. I checked this seller's review carefully before purchasing the product. I thought the overall positive review should give me confidence. However, it was disaster.

DBROTH did not communicate with me. I did not receive any tracking information after a week. I emailed them 5 times and no response. Another week passed, amazon.com sent me email regarding the shipment of this product. I believe this was when they actually ship my product. 20 days after placing order, I received my metal detector. There was no shipping carton outside the gift box. A UPS label was sticked on the gift box. If you want to give this as a gift, you would have to buy another box.

Anyway, I can stand these small problems if metal detector works. However, no battery inside the package. The description said batteries were included. So I had to run into Walgreens and paid $7.45 to get two 9V batteries.

Metal detector was not working. It started beeping right away when I turned on the switch. It doesn't matter how low I tuned the sensitivity. I emailed DBROTH about the problem and ask them for help. Again, no response. I contact american hawks directly and noticed DBROTH was not even an authorized seller. I compared mine with my brother's. Even though they look so similar, DBROTH's was much crappy and fragile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Falcon Metal Detector with LCD, August 9, 2009

This item does pickup various metals in the all metal mode but when you use the notch or discount mode it has a hard time picking up gold items and the reason I know this is that I used my own gold ring to test it and it was having difficulty capturing the presence of my ring but in the all metal mode it does pickup the item quickly and with a strong signal. It did not cost much so I really can not expext it do wonders so for its price I rate this item 3 stars an average rating.
