5.0 out of 5 stars easy to learn, easy to use
For most metal detectors, we need to learn and practice before we can really get it work. This model is very easy to operate without spending a lot of time learning. I recommend this model for lazy people like me.

The performance is also as I expected.

I was not happy with this item. It was a gift for my son and he loved getting it but it does not find a whole lot. My main gripe was that the headphones did not work at all and when I contacted someone (I thought F&N) about it I was told the whole thing needed to be retruned and refunded which would take 6 weeks then we could order another. After writing a negative review...

I bought one from a local dealer and started scanning my boy friend's yard (house built in 1920's). Immediately I picked up all sorts of signals. After a while I became used to the different tones and began discriminating what to and not to dig. I found 3 spoons, one of them is silver, and 5 wheat pennies. The next day I found about $ in change. I think its a great deal for the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy one from American Hawks, July 1, 2008
The Deep Blue is not for everyone. This machine is for the serious treasure seeker only.

When I first got my machine about 3 months ago, I was amazed at how easy it seemed to work. Then as the ground thawed and I started to hunt I soon became dissatisfied. It seemed to have poor depth and very unstable. The tone would bounce all over the place and I dug as many as 10 holes to 1 real target. I thought it was a piece of junk!

A friend who also owned the same machine convinced me to calm down and begin to learn the machine. I took his advice and made a "coin garden" and began studying how the detector responded to different targets. I then went into the field with the attitude to learn and not gripe.

Today after about 60 hours of practice I love the Deep Blue. It's a great land hunting machine, the best I've ever owned. And I've owned the best of other brands.

The secret is to learn the machine. It does give a distinct tone for coins, jewelry, and artifacts. In fact, for the price, it's probably the best Civil War relic machine in the world. It's also a killer in high trash areas.

Now I just need to see how well it does at the beach.

My 11 y.o. son got this for Christmas and has enjoyed it immensely ever since. He and his friends have found many coins and treasures in the sand at the beach. A quality detector that is perfect for older children and provides hours of wholesome fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome metal detector, September 20, 2008
This review is from: American Hawks Explorer Metal Detector Arm Support, View Meter, Waterproof Search Coil with Headphone, Bag, Batteries (Misc.)
After researching all the other brands I choose this one because it had a nice digital easy to read display, not a complicated needle type. After a week of using it I bought another one for my wife. The only complaints I have is with the battery life of around 4 to 5 hours of use. I did have one instance when it started cutting on and off with certain movemints but after changing out the batteries I think it will be ok now, I hope. The rod joint isn't very steady but after wrapping electrical tape around the male part of the shaft it now feels pretty secure. I have found plenty of change and even my telephone lines at around a foot deep! Be very carefull digging in your yard!

Works fine around home. I haven't tried any "treasure hunting" at the park but it picks out fairly small objects. I do like the armrest. It takes the strain out of holding the pickup out in front.

After writing a negative review I was contacted by F&N and they ended up sending me new headphones that work properly. So now I would recommend trying the device but if you are not happy please contact F&N because amazon customer service sucks.

Great value for the money because everything is included to get started. Purchased as a Christmas gift for our daughter and she found a few coins and an old railroad spike. She was excited to find anything at all. A great unusual gift for anyone of any age. Lots of fun.

Those who gave this thing a great review must have been paid by the manufacturer to do so. This thing is very cheap, poorly designed, and very disappointing. I just received mine and I'm already marking it to sell at the flea market next week.

I threw out a few coins, and some bottle caps on my patio to test it and see how well it discriminated pennies from nickels and bottle caps. It didn't. It either alerted to all of them, or none of them. As for gold, either my wedding band is fake, or this thing doesn't know gold when it sees it.

Things that are substandard on this:
~The electical connections are very loose and often short out causing false alarms.
~The lower rod to upper rod connection assembly is very weak (someone with a mechanical aptitude can easily reinforce this with simple parts from the Hardware store).
~The sensitivity on this is either "Pick up EVERYTHING" or "Pick up NOTHING".

One last note I'd like to make on this. Even though it says American Hawks, I cannot find anywhere in the manual, on the box, or on the product, their brand name. Either they are ashamed to put their name on it, or it's a generic being advertised as a name brand. I'm not going to make any accusations, but the box and metal detector I have, look exactly like the pictures.

If the shaft on this detector would have stayed together, we might have been able to make better use of it. Shouldn't have to zip tie sticks around it to keep it together. May just have been the one we received, but this did not work for us. Thank goodness for refunds.
