4.0 out of 5 stars Lowering Sodium Without Lowering Taste!
Most Americans could benefit from lowering the sodium in their diets. Canned foods, processed foods, and fast food all contribute to the high fat, high salt diets that many of us eat. When faced with getting older or health issues, many people turn to their doctors for help with this American epidemic. But why not start now? If you have high blood pressure, are obese,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Sounding Recipes but Trouble With Outcomes
My partner and I picked up this book at the library to try out. The recipes sounded delicious at first glance, but when we tried to prepare a few of them, we found that the ingredient amounts didn't add up to the servings. In particular, the Tuna Penne Cassarole was to yield five 1 cup servings but barely yielded two. After several other random selections were found to...

4.0 out of 5 stars Lowering Sodium Without Lowering Taste!, May 27, 2006
Most Americans could benefit from lowering the sodium in their diets. Canned foods, processed foods, and fast food all contribute to the high fat, high salt diets that many of us eat. When faced with getting older or health issues, many people turn to their doctors for help with this American epidemic. But why not start now? If you have high blood pressure, are obese, or are just looking to improve your diet, this cookbook is a must for you!

Filled with tons of great recipes (and an additional 50 from the last addition), this book includes categories such as Appetizers & Snacks, Seafood, Meats, Soups, Vegetarian Entrees, and even Desserts. All of the recipes include complete nutrient information and include calories, fat (including saturated, polyunsaturated, and monosaturated), cholesterol, sodium, carbs, protein, calcium, potassium, and dietary exchanges. The only things missing from this addition are a spiral binding (to help it lay flat) and full color photos of each recipe.

Some of my family's favorites include: Blackberry & Balsamic Chicken, Grilled Sesame Chicken, Cowboy Steak with Portobello Mushrooms, Slow Cooker Beef and Red Beans, Baked Pork Chops with Apple Dressing, Braised Lentil and Vegetable Medley, Strawberry Orange Sauce, Chocolate Chip Banana Bread, Flan Caramel, Potato Skin Nachos, and Vegetable Beef Soup.

Enjoy!

I have tried a few of the recipes and enjoyed them. My hubby wasn't too thrilled.

I am voluntarily trying to reduce my sodium intake as my blood pressure has steadily crept up over the last few years, as has my weight! It isn't easy for me because I like salty foods but this cookbook has helped and will continue to help.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tasty quick meals, May 11, 2008
This review is from: American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, 3rd Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet (Paperback)
I bought this book because I wanted to reduce the amount of sodium I was eating. I noticed in some of the other cookbooks I was using the amount of sodium I was taking in was quite high. I almost didn't purchase it because it didn't have any pictures, and I am glad I changed my mind. The recipes I have tried so far have been easy and very tasty. My daughters(6 & 8) ate up the Crustless Garden Quiche, Zesty Oven-Fried Potatoes, Poached Salmon, and Thyme Fish Steaks. All were very quick to make on a weeknight. Also very delicous is the chocolate chip banana bread which we have made together twice. It did not take long to make and they did most of the work the second time.

The appendix also has helpful advice on shopping, cooking , and making substitutions. I look forward to making more recipes fromt this book.

I purchased this book after I was advised to maintain a low salt diet for reasons of cardio-vascular health. Not only have my wife and I fallen in love with many of the recipes, we have benefited from lower blood pressure, more energy and weight loss.

I purchased this book for my wife to give to my mother in law to cook for my father in law who needs to eat a low salt diet. I am told that everyone is very pleased with the book and has used many of its recipies with great results. My wife originally read this book by taking out a copy at our local public library. She liked it so much that we later purchased the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this cookbook.!!, June 11, 2008

This review is from: American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, 3rd Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet (Paperback)
I recently was put on a low sodium diet and I needed some help getting started. This cookbook has a lot of recipes that are just for the everyday person. There are so many tips too. I think this is a great source for someone who is looking for easy recipes as well as substitute recipes for things you make now but need to change to make them low sodium. I'm very happy with this book. When I first got it it made feel better about a low sodium diet. Better in the sense that it is something I can do and succeed at. In my opinion this is a great book to have in your kitchen.
Even if you are not restricited... as you all know Americans eat way too much sodium and need to cut back.

Note that this book is "low salt," not "no salt."

I am finding good usable recipes in this book.
It also gives sources for finding low or no sodium ingredients that I do not have available in my small town.

Some recipes do have more sodium in the finished product than I want due to severe heart disease and pulmonary edema. Good book for the average person who is trying to prevent my intensity of disease.

There are recipes for low sodium spice and herb mixes that have turned out to be very good.
Very pleased with the book.

Note that this book is low sodium recipes, not no salt recipes. There is salt used in some recipes and more baking powder than I think is safe for me.

Once we get used to knowing how to plan low or no salt recipes, we can use these recipes by changing the ingredients slightly with still good results.

My diet is limited to 1500 mg of sodium per day. Its easy to exceed that, but rarely worth it with a condition like Meniere's. I trust this resource for my very quality of life.

This cookbook is so much better than I expected. The recipes are modern and easy to follow. The ingredients called for are items we've all heard of and our families would eat. I am a big fan of the Food Network and was worried a low sodium diet would be tough to follow and would be boring. I am very encouraged by this book. I highly recommend it for anyone trying to eat healthy.

This review is from: American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, 3rd Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet (Paperback)
Great reference book as well a recipe source. Most processed foods contain so much salt, coupled with our own automatic use of salt, this is a good source of options and cautions for all.
