With more than 6,000 synonyms, this volume provide an excellent resource for the intended audience of learners of English as a second language.

The list of synonyms for any given word lacks the depth and breadth of word choice provided by a standard thesaurus such as The Oxford American Thesaurus of Current English (1999), with 350,000 synonyms. However, unlike a standard thesaurus, the synonyms are not just listed but defined and also used in sample sentences. Two bonus features are a section on irregular English verbs and a section on idiomatic use of prepositions such as attest to, estranged from, and proficient at. About the Author

The Editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries and of other reference titles published by Houghton Mifflin Company are trained lexicographers with a varied array of interests and expertise. Most of the editors hold graduate degrees and have studied at least one foreign language. Several have degrees in linguistics or in the history of the English language. Others have degrees in science or sometimes other disciplines.
