A diamond in the rough,
By Rex Marksmanson "HEYO!" (Long Island, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Hi-Fi (Audio CD)
When most rock fans hear the name American Hi-Fi they think one thing, untalented. How do I know this you say? Simple. I was one of those people, until I got to hear American Hi-Fi's debut album. It's easy to understand why some would think this though, being that the first single "Flavour of the weak" does not really do the band justice. Now, don't get me wrong, I now think "Flavour of the weak" is a great song, but it took a few listens through the album for me to realize that.American Hi-Fi brings something back to rock that has been missing for years, plain and simple rock n' roll. By taking the sound of 80's metal, pop punk and grunge (thats right, grunge) they have created one of the most refreshing sounds on the scene in years. And, unlike many bands today American Hi-Fi sticks to the basics of guitar(s), bass and drums. No more, no less. The album itself is...Do I dare to say it? Yes, it is a masterpiece, an absolutely flawless record. It's one of those albums where almost every rock fan can find something they like, even if they dislike the rest of the album. By working with legendary Metallica producer Bob Rock, the band has made one of the clearest and most organized sounds to date. This contrasts what some rock albums are today, either over or under produced, and disorganized. Personally, I wish more people would give American Hi-Fi a chance, and stop being stubborn. I felt the band was just another cheap, marketed, one hit wonder, until I heard the album in it's entirety. A refreshing album by a talented band, hats off to American Hi-Fi for this one.

There's no more room for pretention in alternative music!,

I am soooo sick of people trying to say that you can't like something that's not totally original and outre. Not everyone can start a revolution; there will never be another Nirvana. So get over it! I LIKE this kind of music, and there's nothing wrong w/ liking bands that have similar sounds/focuses. Why the hell do you people think genres develope? American Hi-Fi's songs are catchy and SAY something, which there detractors have yet to do. Every time I hear "Flavor of the Week" on the radio I crank it up and sing along, and isn't that what's really important? ENJOY music, don't worry about what critics may say, because the critics aren't you. Bottom line: I'm gonna buy this CD, and I suggest you do the same.

All-Around Hit,
By A Customer
This review is from: American Hi-Fi (Audio CD)
I just bought this CD yesterday, and I haven't been able to stop listening to it. When I first heard their single "Flavor of the Weak", I absolutely loved it, although it kinda reminded me of other bands (like Newfound Glory and Blink-182). But when I listened to the CD, it had a sound completely its own. It has a full, mature sound to it, and can range from serious and edgy to fun and cheerful to slow and sweet. One thing that surprised me about the album is the lack of swearing. Although is has a warning on it, only 3 songs contain any "explicit lyrics". I would definitely recommend this to anyone into rock or punk.

Try Flavor Of The Year...,
This review is from: American Hi-Fi (Audio CD)
American Hi-Fi did something very few would dare to in 2001. They created a pop-metal record. Adequate production, metallic riffs, and pop singing and lyrics all rolled in one and aimed at the face. That's AHF's debut. The catchy single "Flavor Of The Weak" is a great song, leaning towards pop-punk but retaining the signature sound, complete with kick-butt video. The song is...actually about, well, a video-game obsessed stoner who cheats on his girlfriend, from the point of view of a third person. Sound weird? It's really not. The song is good. So good that it had me drooling for the album to release in Feb. last year. Other highlights are present, like "Surround," "My Only Enemy," "Hi-Fi Killer," "Another Perfect Day," and "Scar." Songs range from NIN knockoffs, to Nirvana imitations, to piledrivers and acoustic ballads. Almost all complete with rippin solos. Sweet. All with minor language. Get past the repetitiveness and it's a gem, I'm sure. 4 stars.

American Hi-Fi: 'nuff said,

American Hi-Fi are, undoubtedly, the best punk/rock band I have ever heard. The flavour they lend to every song they produce is as unique and individual as they are. This album has some of the best riffs, rhythms, and lyrics since Oasis, and they pull it off with style! For those with 'The Art of Losing', this album can seem a little dissapointing, but just listening to it shows how the band have found their feet and developed their incredible talent, and goes right back to the roots of their style. 'Flavour of the Weak' is pure American Hi-Fi, and since it's the song that first drew me towards the band, it will always be their best. Personally, I love the accoustic sound of 'Another Perfect Day', and the moody tones of 'Don't wait for the Sun', but whether you're a fan of Blink 182, Oasis, or even Metallica, this album delivers something for everyone!

American Hi-Fi IS Killer,

There was something catchy about the first single "Flavor of the Weak" that made me want to listen to it repeatedly, and then to discover what other gems these 4 guys could produce. From the softer ballads like "Another Perfect Day" and "Don't Wait for the Sun" to the heavy hard-core "Scar", the 13 songs included in this CD are catchy and addicting. The entire CD screams impact. By far, the highlights include "Blue Day", "Hi-Fi Killer", "I'm A Fool" and of course the hit first single "Flavor of the Weak". However, if you're sick of the excessive over-playing of this single on the radio, its best to hear what other brilliance this band has to offer. You'll be glad you did. The entire CD rocks. Plain and simple.

Outstanding debut from Stacy Jones and company,
By
This review is from: American Hi-Fi (Audio CD)
Stacy Jones has proved himself over and over as an amazing drummer for bands like Letters to Cleo, Veruca Salt, Aimee Mann, etc., but man, this debut provies he's got some major talent when it comes to songwriting and singing as well. A wicked mix of pop, rock, and a bit of punk makes for a helluva great first album, with top tracks being "Surround", "Flavor of the Weak", "Hi-Fi Killer" and "Scar". AHF has their own sound, but fans of Green Day, Weezer, Sum-41, Wheatus, etc., should be picking this one up to add to their collection.

AN EVERLASTING FLAVOR,

I got this album a while back when it first came out so it's been in my posesion for quite some time now and I have to say I still listen to this album quite frequently... All the songs are good and it's been a while so I know I truely love it and i'm not even close to getting sick of hearing it...I think they have an awesome sound they seem to be the most under rated band out there in my oppinion. You don't hear much about them and whenever I ask my friends about them alot of them are like "WHAT WHO" deffinantly one of the best bands of todays music out there!!!

In heavy rotation over here..,
By Michael Pitts "skoupy13" (Norcross, GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American Hi-Fi (Audio CD)
I really like this record. I have to admit, after hearing "Flavor or the Weak", I was led to believe this record was going to be something completely different than it is. The songs are straight rock, as opposed to the pop-punk feel of "Flavor of the Weak". My favorite tracks are "Safer on the Outside" and "Wall of Sound", but there is not a song on the album that I would considered poor. This may have been one of the best records released so far this year.
