4.0 out of 5 stars "Dope Comix 1-5", July 24, 2010
This review is from: All American Hippie Comix (Paperback)
This is a compilation of the "underground" comix title "Dope Comix", published by Kitchen Sink Press and ran for five (irregularly published) issues. The humor may be a bit dated, since these were the products of the 1970's and 1980's, but the material is first rate.

All the strips deal with altered consciousness by way of "creative chemistry", with various types referred to (but mostly from marijuana).

With an introduction by Timothy Leary, the book contains material by (among others) Howard Cruse, Doug Hansen, Joe Coleman, Lee Marrs, J. Michael Leonard, Jay Kinney, Joe Schwind, Aline Kominsky-Crumb (R. Crumb's wife), Greg Irons, Gary Whitney, Steve Styles, Dan Steffan, Larry Rippie, Sharon Kakn Rudahl Charles Burns, and even an "Omaha the Cat Dancer" piece by Reed Waller and a page by Mike Kazaleh before his work with "Ren and Stimpy" and "TMNT". Included are reproductions of the comic book covers by Leslie Carbaga, John Pound, Jay Lynch, Rand Holmes and Charles Burns.

Least you think this is a totally pro-drug book, there are several strips that offer warnings about substance abuse. Michael T. Gilbert's "Dinner Party" deals with the long term effects of drugs on a friend of the family. Jim Valentino's "Th' Kid Does Belladonna" is a disturbing account of the effects of the plant. Stewart Chapman and Tim Boxell's "By the Time I Get to Phoebus" recalls an LSD trip gone awry. Greg Iron's "Cold Turkey" deals with that All-American bad habit, cigarettes.

Drug use and some nudity, this is strictly for the grown-ups.
