The author does an excellent job of covering a huge subject in well-written, intelligent prose that's very easy to read. The two volumes of "An American History" are not exhaustive in their depth, yet the cover the mateial impeccably and are excellent platforms from which to launch further inquiries. Even if you "don't like history" Gruver's great writing ability will take the pain away and let you appreciate the subject.
