This review is from: American History at a Glance: From the Earliest Settlements to the Present (Paperback)
Concise review of US american history from the 'Discovery' of the New World to 'Today' (whatever that means. My 1978 fourth edition ends with Carter, later editions are extended). The tone is factual and quite unbiased and the book but provides for sufficient linkages and explanation to understand the major movements and dynamic within US history. I pull it out of the shelf when I want to get a quick reminder of certain events in US history (say: background on Monroe doctrine, or Louisiana purchase) and am mostly satisfied with information provided. This was my first 'American History' book when I came to the US in 1982. I like it much better than other 'popular' books like 'US History for Dummies' which tries to be funny (and that means you have to read 2 times as much in order to obtain same information as current book. Disadvantage of this book: very limited number of maps and other visual aids. |
